Mother’s Day is Sunday, and I know you are all looking to find that perfect Mother’s Day gift.  On the wishlist of many moms is a digital photo frame.  Kodak provided me with a digital frame to review, so you can know what you’re buying.

kodak

The Kodak EasyShare P720 is a 7 inch digital photo frame.  It’s easy to use…just plug in a memory card and go!  Or, if you’d like to customize your slide show a bit more, use the EasyShare software to drag and drop photos to a memory card, which you then insert into the frame for playing

The transitions between slides are very smooth, and there are a couple of different options.  My personal favorite is when the picture pans in slightly, and then fades out for the next photo.

Make sure your photos have a clear resolution, because if they’re even slightly blurry, you’ll notice it on the frame!  But for nice clear photos, the display is great!

To access the settings on the digital frame, the Kodak EasyShare P720 has a convenient touch frame.  You don’t need to touch the screen at all, which saves the display area from nasty fingerprints!

Included in the digital frame package are a couple of matte screens, you you have several different options for displaying your photos.

The Low-Down on the Kodak EasyShare P720

The Pros:

  • Easy to get set up.  I didn’t even read the directions!  :)
  • Sharp looking
  • Several different options for customizing the display
  • Nice picture for sharp photos
  • Can add videos & music, when using the desktop software
  • Allows for different memory storage devices…USB drives, memory cards, etc.

The Cons:

  • Watch out for blurry photos!  They’ll look blurrier on the frame (but I think this is true of all digital photo frames).
  • No Mac Support

My Overall Opinion

I think this would make a great Mother’s Day gift, especially if your mom isn’t technologically inclined.  I don’t think it would be difficult for the average mom or grandma, with little digital camera experience to get the hang of this photo frame!  And at $79.95 on the Kodak site, it’s reasonably priced for a digital frame, as well!

I don’t have one to give away today.  I even have to send my test frame back.  :(   But I’m thinking I might need to buy one for myself…unless my husband reads this review and gets one for Mother’s Day.

Earth Month Green Giveaway

Mon, Apr 20, 2009

You all are going to be really excited about this one!  To celebrate Earth Month, Walmart & it’s suppliers let the Elevenmoms test a bunch of green products.  And the best part is, they’re giving each of us another set of products to give away on our blogs!  So if you’re just starting to go green, this is the giveaway for you!

earthmonth-giveaway

What’s included in the big green prize package?  Well, let me tell you, there’s some good stuff!  I’ll start with the smallest item and work my way up!

White Cloud Green Earth Paper Towels and Toilet Paper

White Cloud Green Earth paper products are made from 100% recycled fiber and are larger than traditional sized rolls of toilet paper and paper towels, so they use less packaging.  Also, the perforations on the paper towels are close together, so you can pull off as much (or as little) as you need.

The greenest option, of course, would be to not use paper towels, but if you can’t live without them, White Cloud Green Earth paper towels are a good choice.

And the toilet paper?  I was skeptical, but it’s pretty soft.  I’ve been using White Cloud regular toilet paper for years, and I can’t tell the difference.

Tide Coldwater Laundry Detergent

Tide has come out with a laundry detergent that is formulated to work well in cold water.  Which means that you no longer have to wash your sheets and towels in hot water, saving you electricity.

I’ll admit that I don’t normally buy laundry detergent, and I probably will continue making my own laundry detergent.  That said, I tested the Tide, and it works really well!  I like the way it smells, too!

Clorox Greenworks

Again, I don’t normally buy cleaning products, but I took the Clorox Greenworks products for a test spin.  I really liked the dishwashing detergent and the all purpose cleaner.  They work well and don’t have that overpowering chemical smell you find with most commercial cleaners.

I wasn’t quite as impressed with the cleaning wipes.  They weren’t very strong, and I’m not fond of products that I throw away after every use, even if they are biodegradeable.  That said, I realize some people love the convenience of a disposable cleaning wipe, and Clorox Greenworks does the job, as long as there’s no tough scrubbing involved.  They’re great for a quick swipe around the sink, a la Flylady.

Brita Water Pitcher

I’m a huge fan of water filter pitchers.  Up until we moved last year, we were on city water that had that yucky chlorine taste.  I used a competitor brand water pitcher to take care of that problem.  So I was really excited when Brita sent me their pitcher to test.  It’s easy to fill, holds more water than my old pitcher, and the water tastes great!  Though the well water in our house already tastes great, so I don’t really need the pitcher.  It’s nice to have cold water on hand though.  And it’s definitely better than throwing away plastic water bottles.

My biggest problem with the Brita Water Pitcher?  The cats love it!  Seriously.  Every time it’s out, I have to watch them, or they tip over the pitcher, so they can drink the water.  They prefer it to the well water I give them from the tap I guess.  Picky cats.

Bissell Little Green Machine

I love this handy machine!  It’s great for spot cleaning carpets and upholstery!  I had the opportunity to talk with the Bissell representatives at South by Southwest, and I was really impressed with the way this machine is manufactured.  They used post-consumer recycled plastic and it’s PVC free.  And the trial sized cleaner that comes with the Little Green Machine works well on stains, though when I run out I’m going to do what Jenn does and use hot water and vinegar.

The total value of this giveaway is around $130!  To enter, leave a comment telling me your best green tip.  I’m closing this contest on Friday, April 25 at noon PST and will draw a winner using a random number generator.  I’ll contact the winner by email, and the winner will have a week to get me their mailing address, or I will draw another winner.

Prize will be shipped directly from Walmart, so I will need to pass along the winner’s contact information, so they can get their prize.

That takes care of all the technical stuff.  Can’t wait to hear your green tips!

Review: Born 2 Impress Children’s Apparel and Accessories

Mon, Mar 16, 2009

I remember 11 years ago when my daughter was born, I enjoyed dressing her up in little dresses and putting bows and cute ponytail holders in her hair.  Don’t worry, she loved it too!  At one point when she was 2, she grabbed a dress, held it up to herself, and declared, “I cute!”

I lived in a small town at the time, without any internet access at home.  My shopping selections were limited to Walmart, Fred Meyer, Sears, and a handful of other stores.

With the explosion of the internet, moms aren’t limited to big box stores when buying children’s apparel and accessories.  It’s possible to support other moms who use their creative abilities to handcraft beautiful children’s accessories.

Born 2 Impress

Born 2 Impress is one such store.  Run by mom, Jenniffer Powell, Born 2 Impress offers handcrafted children’s apparel and accessories.  I was sent a headband, ponytail holder, and two clips to review.

The craftsmanship on every item was impeccable.  Everything was tightly sewn or woven together, minimizing the risk that ribbons and beads would fall off and into little hands.

My eleven year old daughter even mentioned that she’d wear the headband and clips.  And it says a lot when a company has tween girl approval!

The Low-Down on Born 2 Impress

The Good

  • The items are cute, cute cute!
  • Accessories are well made.
  • A wide variety of accessories and age groups to choose from.
  • Reasonably priced.

The Bad

  • They weren’t around when my daughter was younger.  :)

My Overall Opinion

I love to support work at home moms!  If you’re looking for cute children’s accessories, be sure to check out Born 2 Impress, because the items are cuter in person than they are in the pictures (and they’re pretty cute in the pictures!).

The Giveaway

Born 2 Impress is offering a $20 GC to their store!  To enter, go to the Born 2 Impress site, browse around, and let me know what your favorite item is in the comments.

Only one entry per person.  Comments will be closed on Monday, March 23 at 12 noon PST, and a winner will be drawn using a random number generator.

Now go check out Born 2 Impress!

In the week leading up to the Oscars in February, a new Sharpie product  made it’s debut:  The Stainless Steel Refillable Sharpie!

1750634_SHFNPremiumBlk_glam

I’m a huge fan of Sharpie markers.  They’ve gotten me through many a move, and I love to use them for labeling packages I’m mailing.  And this newest member of the Sharpie family looks, well, sharp!  It has a really sleek feel to it, and it’s fine tip writes clearly, whether you’re signing autographs or addressing packages!

Sharpie marker ink writes on most surfaces, doesn’t smear once it’s dry, and is fade and water resistant, making it the perfect ink for permanent marking.

The new Stainless Steel Refillable Sharpie hits the stores this month at a suggested retail price of $6.99, with the refill priced at $1.99.

The Giveaway

I’m giving away 5 Stainless Steel Refillable Sharpie markers!  All you have to do is leave a comment on this post, telling me what you mostly use your Sharpie markers for.

Review: Nuru Personal Finance Cards

Fri, Mar 13, 2009

Comments Off

Personal Finance-2TI’ve reviewed a lot of personal finance products over the last couple of years, but this is the first time I’ve reviewed anything like Nuru Personal Finance Cards.

Nuru Personal Finance Cards are like flashcards, but for personal finance.  The cards are as big as a deck of cards, and they have a little hole in the corner for a ring to hold them together (ring is included with cards).  The cards easily fit in a purse for quick reference.

Nuru Personal Finance Cards cover seven subject areas:

  1. Essential Vocabulary
  2. Personal Planning
  3. Investing
  4. Loans
  5. Retirement Vehicles
  6. Credit
  7. Insurance

The information contained in these cards is pretty basic, so if you’re well versed in personal finance, these cards are not for you.  However, I think this would be a great resource for high schoolers before they head off to college.

At $9.95, Nuru Personal Finance Cards are affordable.  So if you’re looking for a practical, easy, and affordable way to teach teens about personal finance, this is one way to do it!

Nuru also makes cards for understanding your car, first aid, exercise, and golf practice drills and tips.

Review & Giveaway: Banana Nut Cheerios

Banana Nut Cheerios I love Cheerios!  I think it’s genetic, because my mom eats Cheerios almost every morning.  Now my favorite cereal has released a new flavor:  Banana Nut Cheerios!

Even if you don’t love Cheerios, you might find you like Banana Nut Cheerios, because it tastes nothing like the original.  It’s sweeter and tastes great!

Unlike the regular Cheerios, the first ingredient is whole grain corn, intead of oats.  Unfortunately, the second ingredient is sugar, meaning this is not something I’d feed my children every day.  But it’s OK for a once a week food.

The other thing that makes it a once a week food is the fact that it only has 1 gram of fiber per serving.  I always aim for 3 grams of fiber per serving in my breakfast cereals.  But again, I’m OK with serving it to my children as a special “Saturday Cereal.”

The Banana Nut Cheerios site has plenty of great ideas as to how you can use Banana Nut Cheerios in muffins, snack bars, parfaits, and more!  And right now you can get a 55 cent coupon by visiting the site!

The Giveaway

Banana Nut Cheerios Giveaway

I’m giving away three, yes three, Banana Nut Cheerios gift baskets!  The gift baskets include a VIP coupon for Banana Nut Cheerios, two cereal bowls, a bread pan, and a banana tree with fruit bowl!

To enter, just leave a comment on this post, letting me know what your favorite cereal topping is!  I will close comments next Wednesday at 6 p.m. and draw winners using a random number generator.

Please only enter once, as duplicate entries will be deleted.  Enjoy!

Twilight: A Giveaway

Sun, Mar 8, 2009

twilight Until I joined the Eleven Moms, I had no idea what Twilight was.  Now I’m hearing about it everywhere!  And I’m told I must read the books, which I’m slightly embarrassed to admit I haven’t even cracked open yet.

Despite my lack of knowledge, Twilight fans everywhere are excited, because the release of Twilight on DVD happens on March 21!  And since Twilight is such a big phenomenon, Walmart and the Eleven Moms are celebrating in a big way!

Walmart has set up a very special Twilight page, complete with a countdown to the release of the Twilight DVD.  You can also find links to the books, the soundtrack, and an application where you can send an e-bite to someone special.

As if that weren’t enough, fellow 11mom Amy Clark from Mom Advice will be interviewing Taylor Lautner (the actor who plays Jacob in the Twilight movie) on Blog Talk Radio tonight (3/9/09)!  The show starts at 9 p.m EST/6 p.m. PST, so if you’re not listening to Frugal Coast2Coast (8:30/5:30) you can catch the interview.  The good news is that archives of both shows will be available, so you can listen to one live and the other later.

But back to the subject of Twilight.  There’s more.  Several of the Eleven Moms, including me, are doing special Twilight giveaways!  I’m going to be giving away a Twilight prize package worth $150!

Twilight merch mix

The package will include things like the Twilight DVD, one of the Twilight books, a t-shirt, and more!  The contents of the prize package may not be exactly what’s in the picture, but it will be similar.

To enter, all you have to do is leave a comment on this post, letting me know what you liked best about the Twilight series.  If you haven’t read the books yet, tell me what intrigues you about the series.

Please only one comment per person, as duplicates will be deleted.  This contest will be open until Friday, March 20 at noon.  I’ll draw a winner using a random number generator.  The winner will be notified that day, and I’ll announce it here on the blog soon after.

I’m looking forward to seeing what you like about the series!

iPhone 3G: The Purchase Experience

Sat, Mar 7, 2009

Comments Off

The ElevenMoms of Walmart are conducting an experiment.  Can a SmartPhone help the average mom save time and money?  To find out, Walmart provided us with gift cards to buy a SmartPhone, so we could put the phones to the test.  Yesterday I headed out to my local Walmart to make my phone purchase.

iPhone

Prior to my phone purchase I did a little research into which phone would best meet my needs.  I chose the iPhone 3G for a couple of reasons.  First, I was already receiving cell phone service through AT&T, and I know I can get a good signal out in the boondocks where I live.

Second, I know several people who already own iPhones, and they all highly recommended them.

I also went to the iPhone page on the Walmart website to see if I needed to do anything with AT&T before making my purchase.  A couple of people left comments saying I should probably bring a cell phone bill and my AT&T account password with me when I made my purchase.  So I grabbed an old bill and headed to Walmart, confident that I was prepared to make my purchase.

The Purchase Experience

I got to Walmart at 3:00 Friday afternoon, a pretty busy time at my local Walmart.  Still, someone was available in the electronics department right away.  Lance, the Walmart cell phone guy seemed very happy to hook me up with an iPhone.  He took my ID, asked for my cell phone number, and then asked for the last four numbers of the social security number on the account.

I wondered out loud if I had put my social or my husband’s on the account.  Lance looked at me and asked whose name was on the account.  Unfortunately it was my husband’s.  Even though I am an authorized user on the account (and am the one who always pays the bill and tweaks the account), he could not proceed with the sale without my husband there.

Slightly annoyed, I called my husband.  He arrived at Walmart with the kids at 3:45.  We were second in line at the cell phone register, and within 5 minutes, Lance was beginning the transaction.  Also within 5 minutes a couple got in line behind us with a cell phone exchange.  Unfortunately for them, BOTH of the backup cell phone reps were at lunch (apparently against company policy).  So they had to wait.  I felt terrible for them.

But back to my transaction. I was impressed that Lance covered everything in detail with us, despite the growing line behind us. He made sure to mention the $18 upgrade fee that would show up on our phone bill next month.  He made sure we knew about the required data plan, and that our contract with AT&T would be extended for 2 years.  He answered all of my questions about what was and what was not included in the new plan.

He even took the time to show me a bit about how to work the phone, and made sure I knew how to get the SIM card out, should that ever be necessary.  Finally, it was time to ring up the transaction.  The poor people behind us had been waiting a half an hour at that point, when finally one of the other cell phone reps came back from lunch.

Anyway, Lance tried to run my gift card through.  The machine beeped.  And beeped again.  And again.  Finally, a CSM was called over.  He finally got the gift card to work.  Lance handed me my receipt and reminded me to keep it in a safe place.  And the transaction was over at 4:20.

My Expectations of the Transaction Vs. What Really Happened

I expected to spend about a half an hour in Walmart.  In reality I was there for almost an hour and a half, because I had to call my husband to come down.  I was slightly annoyed by this fact, especially after Lance told me it was due to a Walmart policy and not an AT&T policy.  I wish there had been something on the website clearly warning me about that detail. I’m sure I’m not the only wife in the U.S. who takes care of the bills, even when they’re in my husband’s name.

I didn’t expect the line to back up so far behind me. I really felt horrible for the people who had to wait in line behind us.  However, I must give kudos to Lance.  I have worked in retail, and when you’re the only person available and the line is backing up, it creates a pretty stressful situation. However, he remained professional, and apologized to the people behind us.  But he didn’t rush my transaction.

Once my husband got there, things went pretty much as I had expected.  The transaction took about a half an hour.  The store representatives were friendly and professional.  And despite the line, the customers were pretty understanding too.  I was pleased with the transaction, overall.

My Expectations of the iPhone

As a fairly frugal person, an iPhone isn’t something that I would have even considered buying with my own money.  The thought of paying $30 a month for a data plan makes me cringe (thanks Walmart for taking care of that!)  But I’m trying to have an open mind.

As a blogger and techno-geek, I’m sure the iPhone will make my life more interesting.  I’m already addicted to all the different applications. It will definitely make traveling easier.  I’ve added the Kindle application and a Bible, so I don’t need to bring any books on the plane with me.

As a busy mom, I’m pretty sure the iPhone will save me time. If I get to school a few minutes early to pick up the kids, I can read email, edit blog posts, or create a shopping list.

As a frugal mom, I’m skeptical as to whether it can save me money. $297 for the phone and an extra $30 a month on my phone bill add up quickly.  I think the iPhone will be useful in checking prices when I’m out and about.  But I’m not convinced it can save me enough money to justify the purchase of an iPhone on the basis of saving money.  We’ll see.  I’m going to try everything in my power to use the iPhone to the maximum of it’s money-saving potential.  If you have any suggestions, I’d love to hear them!

Despite my skepticism, though, I must say the iPhone is REALLY cool! And I’m glad I get to try it out!
