4 Frugal Gift Ideas for your Spouse

My wife and I just celebrated our anniversary and this year I actually remembered! I will never forget again, I promise honey. But that is a post for another day and it will be titled, “How to make up with your wife without breaking the bank.”

But anyways, this year I scored major points with my wife. Some of the gift giving tips below fit into not only anniversaries, but also birthday’s, Christmas, and of course Mother’s Day.

Here are a few of my favorite gift ideas that my wife has loved that didn’t break the bank:

  1. Music Mix – If you have your music collection on itunes this one becomes really easy. Put together a mix of songs that shows her how much she means to you. A couple years ago I did this for our anniversary and my wife still listens to that mix in the car.
  2. Breakfast in Bed - An oldie but a goodie. Although a word of warning, if your kids are young, this becomes VERY labor intensive for Dad! But it is definitely worth the effort and the mess. TIP: To all Dad’s, have a tall ladder handy to remove waffle batter from the ceiling!
  3. Personalized Gifts - I’m not a big fan of the Hallmark card as I don’t need a card company telling me how I should feel towards someone. So I help the kids make Mom a birthday card and let them write whatever they want on it. Always a hit and a true keepsake. Another fun option we have done is to use a service like Snapfish.com or Shutterfly.com and make a custom calendar with pictures for Mom to hang in the kitchen or home office.
  4. Gift of Time Spent - My wife has told me several times the past few years that she does not want anything other than doing something together as a family. I use to think that she just didn’t want me to spend any money on her. But when I see the huge smile on her face when the kids and I plan a fairly inexpensive outing (like a bike ride and picnic) for her birthday I knew I was wrong.

Do you have any gift ideas to add to my list? Looking forward to your response. Now in keeping with tradition, here are some of my best money saving online coupons from my website.

  1. My husband and I like to help eachother pick out our own gifts. Yes, it definetly takes the surprise out of it, but we have a good time working together to pick out primo presents.

  2. This probably fits under your “personalized gifts” category, but some of the gifts I’ve treasured the most have been the homemade ones. If someone buys me a scarf, it’s nice, but if they *knitted* me a scarf, I feel a whole different level of appreciation. I know that mine is an original, made just for me, by someone who cares enough to spend the time making it.

So, whether it’s a cross you carve from some wood or a collage of photos you cut and paste yourself, etc., I say make something from the heart with your own two hands. Thrifty and far more sentimental!
