Friday Financially Savvy Links: Valentine’s Edition

My husband and I don’t usually make a huge deal of Valentine’s Day. It’s usually hard to get a babysitter, and between the cost of the babysitter, dinner out, and a movie, that’s a lot of money!

This year, however, the grandparents offered to take the kids all afternoon! So I’m thinking it might be a day to celebrate after all! It’s not often that we get a whole afternoon child-free! Now where should we go for lunch, after we drop the kids off…

My hubby is working Vday. If I was closer, I’d hang out with your kids for free. ;) I’m a pretty good babysitter!

Go to a local restaurant… don’t do a chain – it’s always so much better. Then consider doing something out of the ordinary, frugal, and cool. My wife and I are going to a local restaurant called “The Travelers Club” in Lansing, MI. Every month they feature a 5 course international cuisine from a differing nations, we always split the meal cuz it’s enough for two and end up having a great dinner for like $25! After dinner we’re heading to the Michigan State University Planetarium to watch their show for like $2/ticket. We did it last year too & loved it!

Since Valentine’s Day is on Sunday this year, I have the day off. It’s also my birthday, and my husband always separates my birthday from Valentine’s Day. I do not expect gifts this year, because we just bought a new computer system. I may get a card or two, and that will be just fine with me.

One of my cousins has a birthday on the 16th, so we are having a dinner party tomorrow night to celebrate both birthdays. I am preparing a home made Mexican meal (beef and cheese enchiladas, black bean and chicken burritos, green salad and made-from-scratch Italian Cream Cake.

I hope you have a wonderful Valentine’s Day. Maybe, instead of going out to a movie, you could rent one via Netflix and snuggle at home, after having dinner out.

Pack a sack lunch, or get some cheaper to go sandwiches, and take a hike (if the weather straightens up), or drive to somewhere with a great view and just enjoy the walk, the time spent together, and enjoy each other. It doesn’t have to be spendy :)

At least lunches are usually cheaper than dinners. The lunch at the nice restaurant is the same price as the dinner at the not-as-nice restaurants so I don’t feel as bad when we splurge. And you’re not paying for a babysitter. Make it a meal to remember.

My wife and I usually skip going on out on valentines day because it is harder to find a babysitter, usually really busy everywhere, and priced higher.

So we take a date night or lunch date sometime during the next week so we can be more relaxed. We usually have a nicer meal at home and rent a movie. Plus my wifes birthday is the 22nd so she likes me spending all my time on her birthday instead of less on both!

Since my hubby has been working overtime, we splurged for Valentine’s Day as a family. Dave & Busters for lunch, the movie Valentine’s day, the girls of the house recieved suprised boquet of flowers, and me & hubby got time for a couple massage. needless to say, I was very happy. :D

Love Children’s Place. Only wish my daughter did. She is so picky (and only 9)!
