H&R Block At Home: Review & Giveaway

by Lynnae on February 9, 2010 · 70 comments

Tax season is in full swing now. Many people who are getting refunds have already filed their taxes, while those of us who will have to pay are reluctantly getting our paperwork together in anticipation of slogging through the tax preparation process.

Recently I had the opportunity to review H&R Block At Home. When I use tax preparation software, I want it to be clear, thorough, and guaranteed. Does H&R Block stand up to my expectations? Let’s find out!

H&R Block At Home Options

H&R Block at Home has 4 online options: Free, Deluxe, Premium, and Best of Both.

Free. If you have a very simple tax return, this is the best option. It doesn’t cost anything for federal e-filing, but each state will cost you $29.95.

Deluxe. If you own a home or have complicated stock transactions, this is an economical choice.  It costs $29.95 to for federal e-filing, and each state is $29.95 in addition to the base price.

Premium. If you have a complicated tax return, this is a great option for you. It covers self-employment and rental income, and it also provides you with a tax advice session with an H&R Block tax professional. The base price is $49.95 for federal e-filing, and again, each state will cost you $29.95 more.

Best of Both. This is a great option if you have a complicated tax situation, and you’re on the fence as to whether you want to save money by doing your own taxes, or spend the money on an accountant. You receive unlimited assistance from a tax professional, and after you have prepared your return, that tax professional will review it and e-file for you. The cost is $99.95 for federal e-file, and each state is an additional $29.95.

Preparing Your Taxes with H&R Block At Home

It’s been a few years since I’ve used H&R Block, but preparing a tax return with H&R Block At Home is as simple as I remember it being with their former program, Tax Cut.

H&R Block At Home guides you through a series of questions, making sure that you enter all the necessary information and get the biggest refund (or tax break) possible.

For fun, I started my return with the Free Edition, even though I know I’ll need to use the Premium or Best of Both edition. Sure enough, when it came time to state what kind of income I needed to enter, H&R Block clearly stated that I’d need to upgrade to enter self-employment income, and then the software gave me the chance to upgrade on the spot.

I like that feature, because if you don’t know what level of H&R Block At Home you need to use, you can start at the lowest level and only upgrade if necessary.

Along the way, H&R Block gives you links to “Learn More” if you don’t understand what they’re asking for. This is useful when you have deductions, but don’t know how to categorize them.

All in all, I was impressed with how clear and easy it was to work my way through my somewhat complicated return.

I also like the fact that you don’t have to pay, until you actually file your return. If you start your return and decide the software isn’t for you, you’re not out any money.

H&R Block At Home Guarantees

Accurate Calculations Guarantee. This is available for all levels of H&R Block At Home, including the free edition. If the software causes a wrong calculation, resulting in you having to pay penalties and interest, H&R Block will reimburse those charges. (limits apply)

Worry Free Audit Support. Available to Deluxe and Premium users, Worry Free Audit Support will provide you with an enrolled agent to represent you, in the event you are audited. This isn’t legal representation, but someone to come alongside you to prepare for your audit and attend the audit with you. The agent will also help you in all communications with the IRS.

Maximum Refund Guarantee. This guarantee is also available to Deluxe, Premium, and Best of Both users. H&R Block guarantees that they will provide you with the maximum refund (or least liability) to which you are entitled. If you find that another tax program gives you a bigger refund (or lower liability), using the same data, H&R Block will refund the fees you paid them to prepare your return.

H&R Block Guarantee. If you are a Best of Both user and elect to have a tax professional look over your return before filing, you are covered by this guarantee. If an error is made on your return, H&R Block will pay for the resulting penalties and interest. And if you’re audited, they will explain your audit notice and let you know what documentation you’ll need to provide the IRS.

If you are a Best of Both user and opt to e-file your return without having a tax professional look over your return first, you will be covered by the Accurate Calculations, Worry-Free Audit Support, and Maximum Refund guarantees, instead of the H&R Block Guarantee.

My Opinion of H&R Block At Home

H&R Block At Home provides is a great value in tax preparation software! The price is low, compared to other programs, and H&R Block’s guarantees assure you that your tax return will be accurate.

As for my expectations of clear, thorough, and guaranteed, H&R Block definitely meets them all.

Even though I’ve been a long term Turbo Tax user, I may just use H&R Block this year. It’s less expensive, has a great guarantee, and provides everything I need.

I like to file early. We get a good refund! (:

2 Mrs. Money February 9, 2010 at 5:03 am

I always wait until the last minute! If I had the software I would do it early. :)

3 Kristi February 9, 2010 at 5:22 am

Just wanted to mention that if you are in the Military H&R Block will do your taxes free- online, over the phone or in a store. (usually if you go and talk to your family assistance center or even your supervisor they can point you in the right direction to find out-you have to go through the right channel)
Just thought some of readers might not know & could get them done for free!

Even if we owe, we usually file early to get the task out of the way. My husband is meticulous about keep the records, so it ends up being fairly atraighforward to do the taxes by hand.

5 Taliface February 9, 2010 at 6:37 am

I like to wait, but only until the end of March.

6 Tamara February 9, 2010 at 7:10 am

I like to file early. Would have already have it completed & sent except the one weekend I’ve been free lately (Jan. 30/31), I didn’t yet have my W-2. Plan to finish by the end of this month.

7 Deoxy February 9, 2010 at 7:19 am

I like to file early, but this past year I rolled an old 401K into an IRA and am still waiting for the right tax forms.

We try to do our taxes early. We buy the software and I start filling it out in March, but it inevitably doesn’t get sent until April 13. I don’t know why we procrastinate. Maybe this year we will file early (yeah, right!).

9 Kelly February 9, 2010 at 7:42 am

We usually do our taxes earlier rather than later. In fact, we have all our necessary paperwork collected, but just haven’t had time yet. I was going to possibly do them this weekend (what a romantic Valentine’s Day….doing the taxes!) but now I think I will wait until next week!

10 Lauren February 9, 2010 at 8:17 am

This year is a little different. I’ve lived in 2 different states and am having a hard time decide how to file. Hopefully, this software will help.

11 Vera February 9, 2010 at 8:25 am

I always file early – as soon as I get all the tax papers – just to get it out of the way and be done with it!

12 Julieanne February 9, 2010 at 8:35 am

We should file early, as we do get a refund, but it’s usually at the beginning of April. Sigh.

13 Pat February 9, 2010 at 8:43 am

We like to file as soon as we get all the paperwork together. As it comes in we put it in a “Tax” folder, then collect it all and get to work.
We try to get as little a refund as possible, by adjusting our deductions every year. That way we are not lending Uncle Sam any interest free money.

14 Lin February 9, 2010 at 9:06 am

We’ve been compiling our tax paperwork in a file, waiting for all the paperwork from employers etc to arrive in the mail, then we can start focusing on preparing our taxes. We learned the hard way last year that having a CPA file taxes cost us a ton, so having the H&R Block At Home software would come in very handy. And save us a lot of money filing our taxes.

15 april brooks February 9, 2010 at 9:09 am

I usually do mine and my boyfriend’s early. But this year is much more complicated as I started my own small design company last year. I need help!

16 Heather S February 9, 2010 at 9:42 am

We always file early! We’re more organized and it’s a nice feeling to get it out of the way and get our money faster!

17 Kim February 9, 2010 at 10:24 am

I like to do it early but something is always missing and by the time I get it, it’s usually a last minute exercise.

18 Danna February 9, 2010 at 10:40 am

Last year, my taxes were filed by Jan. 31. This year, I have decided to start a Roth IRA for 2009 for myself and my husband and I am still working things out. Despite the fact that Roth IRA’s are not usually tax deductible, people in a certain income bracket can get a “retirement savings” deduction up to a certain amount. I am going to max that out. Then I think I’ll only owe about $150. I just need to figure out where I want to open my IRA.
BTW, I learned this fact from the “error check” on Turbotax online. So, I don’t need your software coupon, I just wanted people to know about the retirement thing. I don’t mind spending the $14.95 to pay for the service I’ve already used.

19 Vanessa February 9, 2010 at 10:41 am

I usually file early, but because I am in school this year I won’t have the time until Spring Break. We do expect to get a refund. I usually use Tax Act. Does this mean that is no longer available and I have to switch?

20 Karen Foster February 10, 2010 at 11:46 am

I just used TaxAct for my family’s taxes this week. They made several upgrades to their system this year, including allowing you to enter W2/1099′s/etc on a screen that looks just like the form you are holding. And it was FREE! (For the federal edition) and my family uses the 1040, a Schedule A and Schedule C.

21 Dave February 9, 2010 at 10:46 am

Since we usually get a good refund, I like to file early.

22 Alex February 9, 2010 at 11:00 am

I wait until the last possible minute.

23 Leighann February 9, 2010 at 11:09 am

We have good intentions of filing early but we usually end up filing ours in March. A good tax prep program would be so helpful!

24 Tianna February 9, 2010 at 12:38 pm

Early bird! As soon as we get all of our tax docs, we rush to get our rebate.

25 Shannon February 9, 2010 at 1:52 pm

We always file early because we need the refund money!

26 Kari February 9, 2010 at 2:17 pm

I always wait until the last minute. I send my husband and the dogs away so they don’t have to hear me scream, rant, rave, etc. I really should just hire someone already….

27 gt0279a February 9, 2010 at 3:16 pm

I always file early when I will get a refund. Easy to be organized these days with W2s and statements held online and usually accessable before 1/31.

28 Linda Borchert February 9, 2010 at 4:01 pm

Ugh – we are self-employed and always have to pay, so I stall as long as possible! We’ve used TurboTax in the past, but I’d be game for trying H&R Block this year…
Thanks, Lynnae!

29 Jessica February 9, 2010 at 5:24 pm

We try and do ours towards the end of Feb. We like to know how much we are getting back and how much we are going to owe, the sooner the better!

30 jill in chicago February 9, 2010 at 5:36 pm

Back in the Old Days when life was simpler and we filed the short form, we waited until midnight on April 15th to drop it off at the Post Office. The USPS used to have a lone postman sitting in a truck with the engine running, accepting those late-late dropoffs. We’d drive home and celebrate with a glass of champagne – oh! what a lark it was. Now that the years, the children, the homeownership, the job changes/losses, and the business startups/closings have made things complicated, we’re just happy to get the darn thing done. I usually search for the cheapest e-filer we can find, then I hammer it out and let it fly. H&R Block worked well for us last year – if the price is right, we’ll use them again!

31 Karen February 9, 2010 at 5:39 pm

i do my taxes later than earlier, although now that i have to fill out financial aid forms for my kids college i try to do earlier

32 Brian Calvert February 9, 2010 at 6:21 pm

For years I always waited until the last minute and went to an H&R Block office until last year. I did the ‘best of both’ through the ebates link and saved an additional 12% off the price. I worked with a member of their team from Michigan I believe and we communicated via IM, email and even phone calls. She was really great and corrected a double entry in my return. Can’t say enough about this program. It was well worth the money and easy as could be.

33 MissyT February 9, 2010 at 7:46 pm

We file as early as possible to get the refund!

34 Night Runner February 9, 2010 at 10:56 pm

I do my taxes early. If I get a refund, I want it fast – I don’t want Uncle Sam to keep hoarding my money interest-free. :(

35 chelsea February 10, 2010 at 1:53 am

I like to do my taxes early & online is the best way to go.

36 Shaun McGowan February 10, 2010 at 4:03 am

I usually file early to get the task out of the way, nothing to worry after.

37 ParisGirl111 February 10, 2010 at 1:46 pm

I didn’t know you could start with the free version and upgrade. Every year I have picked the most expensive version. I am going to try that this year. Thanks!

38 Selena February 10, 2010 at 1:48 pm

I like to file my tax returns at the last minute usually. It’s not really that I like doing that…it’s just how it always ends up. :)

39 Virginia February 10, 2010 at 4:05 pm

I like to file my tax return before the April deadline. It doesn’t always work out that way, but I try to get it done by then. The H&R Block program sounds interesting.

40 Diane February 10, 2010 at 5:01 pm

We usually file an extension because ours are so complicated, but I love the idea of getting the software because I like to understand things before I take it to the accountant. The more organized I can be before I take in my records, the less it will cost us in the long run! I’ve used Turbo Tax in the past, so it was nice to read this review- very good!

41 Kara February 11, 2010 at 1:48 pm

I like to file my taxes early – no need to wait until the last minute! My husband is in between, so we usually file in early March.

42 Kathy February 11, 2010 at 6:38 pm

We like to file by mid-March – so it’s not really early or late, I guess.

43 Rebecca Sparks February 11, 2010 at 10:39 pm

I try to get it done by Feb… for the Fafsa.

44 Bill February 12, 2010 at 6:53 am

I would like to do my taxes early beacause every year it seems I wait to the last minute and then its a mad rush to get it done. This year I own my first co-op so it wont be as simple as it used to be as a renter.

45 Robin February 13, 2010 at 1:00 pm

I want to file my taxes early.
I would love to have one of your H & R Block Key codes.

46 Dat February 15, 2010 at 12:36 am

I like to file early. It makes for a less stressful year as well as it gets your mind of worrying for taxes.

47 Gail February 16, 2010 at 8:31 am

I would love to find a software that makes filing taxes easier. I like to file early.

48 Pat Powell February 16, 2010 at 3:45 pm

I file middle of the road…somewhere before the first week of March..

49 Patrick February 18, 2010 at 5:49 pm

very nice offer…… i hope it works out. H & R Block did my taxes this year and I am very happy.

50 David LaMendola March 1, 2010 at 8:28 am

I used to file early, however, our tax preparer passed away, late 2009. I am plaaning on filing for the first time, online. I Like to file early, and I most definately need the free software, as you can see.

51 Harv March 24, 2010 at 8:53 am

Same as Robin;
I want to file my taxes early.

52 David J April 9, 2010 at 7:41 pm

Let’s see … it’s April 9th and I haven’t done them yet! I always file an extension. Procrastination.

53 Howard Lowitzer August 26, 2010 at 4:25 pm

Welcome to my world…the one where I try to scramble to pay the IRS back because of the error in the software HR Block used to do my taxes. They offered to reimburse the fee I paid but no help with the $2000 I have 30 days to pay. How’s that for standing by your product??? BUYER BEWARE!

54 Heather D December 29, 2010 at 7:33 pm

61 kaity February 4, 2011 at 7:02 pm

EARLY!!!!!

62 Richard February 14, 2011 at 10:55 am

I want to do it early but I always have to wait for my stockbroker to send their yearly report which they don’t do until February. But I appreciate your comments on the H&R Block at Home option to pay more for unlimited tax advice from a professional in addition to the software. I retired in the middle of the year so this year I have both earned income, pension income, annuities, and capital gains. I have always done it myself with the software but that $100 deal looks pretty good for this year.

63 me February 14, 2011 at 8:45 pm

early since I’m getting a refund! :D

64 Lynne February 15, 2011 at 4:49 pm

I know I’m late, I just discoverd your site BUT wanted to say that I’m a little of both. There have been years where my hubby and I have filed super early, then sometimes we’re in the middle like now, then times like last year where we filed 2 days before the deadline! I guess we’re all over the place. I’m so bummed I missed the opportunity to get in this contest…

65 Charles Pruitt February 17, 2011 at 5:17 pm

I want to file my taxes now.

66 nicole February 27, 2011 at 3:42 pm

67 Josh March 11, 2011 at 4:40 pm

68 Bennett March 21, 2011 at 5:49 pm

I do them early cause I need the refund!

69 Jennifer March 28, 2011 at 1:02 pm

I do them early b/c I typically get a nice federal refund. Sometimes I owe state and I’ll wait to file that one separately (until I HAVE to pay it!) Thanks!

70 nan April 11, 2011 at 8:35 am

prepare and document all year – file late
