Are You Ready for the Superbowl?

by Lynnae on January 29, 2010 · 172 comments

I love the Superbowl! I like football, but I’m not the world’s biggest fan. None of my favorite teams made it to the Superbowl this year, but I’m still looking forward to game day. Why, you ask? Well, for the Superbowl party, of course!

Superbowl party

This year my husband and I will be attending a party with his co-workers. They’re a great group of people, and we always have a fantastic time. But feeding a huge group of people can end up costing quite a bit.

There are a couple of ways to cut back on the costs. First, you can go potluck style. That’s what my husband and his coworkers do. Everyone brings a dish to share. This year I’m thinking about making Victory Veggie Pizza, a cold veggie pizza, crafted to look like a football field. It’s not a cheap recipe, but since I’m only bringing one dish, I might splurge a bit. The recipe is fun, and it’s always a hit.

The other way to save money on a pizza party is to serve inexpensive football food. You know, hotdogs, crackers, dip, and the like. At one of my favorite Superbowl parties, we had Coney Island Dogs. Cheap and yummy!

A Superbowl Party for Less and a Giveaway to Boot!

How can you throw a Superbowl party for under $50? Is it possible? It is, if you shop carefully.  Currently Walmart is running a Gametime promotion, where you can get a lot of Superbowl snacks for under $50.

For $44 you can buy

  • One package of Oscar Meyer meat hot dogs (8 ct.)
  • One package of Johnsonville bratwursts (6 ct.)
  • Two packages of Great Value hot dog buns
  • Two bags of T.G.I. Friday’s frozen appetizers
  • One Hormel Supreme Party Tray
  • 12” Chocolate Chunk Cookie
  • Two boxes of Nabisco Wheat Thins or Triscuit Crackers (8-10 oz. box)

That’s not too bad! Look for coupons to make it an even better deal! Have your friends bring some drinks, and you’re set!

What’s more, to celebrate Superbowl party time, I’m giving away a $50 Walmart gift card to one lucky reader!

To enter, leave a comment on this post, letting me know which team you’re rooting for: the Colts or the Saints (or none at all…you can be honest and tell me you just want the card). Don’t worry. I don’t have a dog in this fight, and I’ll be picking the winner, using a random number generator.

I’ll close comments at 12 noon PST on Tuesday, February 2, 2010. The gift card will be sent out via first class mail from Oregon, as soon as I get the winner’s address. Giveaway open to residents of the United States only.

I think that takes care of the technical details! So…who do you want to win?

*Walmart provided me with two $50 Walmart gift cards for my participation in this program. I’m keeping one for my time & effort in writing this post, and I’m giving the other away.

I love the Walmart promotion and the veggie pizza idea.

I will be cheering for the Indianapolis Colts.

2 Ryan January 29, 2010 at 1:01 pm

I’m going for the Colts, but it’s not a passionate interest – more of a coin flip.

3 Sarah L January 29, 2010 at 1:10 pm

I’ll be rooting for the Saints! (Just because I don’t like how the Saints beat up on Brett!)

4 Ruth January 29, 2010 at 1:19 pm

I would have rooted for the Vikes, BUT now I could go either way!

5 Meghan January 29, 2010 at 1:32 pm

My husband has been an avid Saints fan since he was old enough to understand ‘liking’ a team. I normally pick who I want to win based on which team colors I find more appealing. In this case, I will be rooting for the Saints :)

6 Kristen January 29, 2010 at 1:41 pm

I am going to be cheering for the Colts! Pro football is not my favorite I prefer college but I like Peyton Manning.

7 Maria January 29, 2010 at 1:42 pm

Rooting for the Saints!

8 Stephanie January 29, 2010 at 1:50 pm

I’m rooting for the Colts!

9 Stacey January 29, 2010 at 1:54 pm

Don’t even have a tv but sure would like a Walmart card…
Thanks for letting me enter anyway.

10 Kim January 29, 2010 at 1:56 pm

I’m more of a college football fan but I like the Walmart gift card!

11 Glenda January 29, 2010 at 1:58 pm

I’m not a huge fan of either team. I have recently made serious effort to cut unnecessary expenses and just began searching money-saving websites. It would be great to win the Wal-Mart card – I could buy more CFL bulbs – just one of the ways I’m trying to cut my electric bill. I have also purchased a huge drying rack and am no longer running my electric dryer; got rid of my electric alarm clock (bought a wind up), unplugged and threw out the dust buster, got rid of the standard porch light that used to burn all night and had a motion light installed. I’m finding this to be a fun challenge!

12 Sarah January 29, 2010 at 2:22 pm

Peyton Manning and the Colts

13 David January 29, 2010 at 2:24 pm

As a Vikings fan, I’m cheering for the Colts by default.

14 Lindsay January 29, 2010 at 2:36 pm

I just moved to Indy a year and a half ago, and GO COLTS!!!!!

15 theprofessor January 29, 2010 at 2:44 pm

GO, eh, i dunno, COLTS! Peyton deserves it. Great quarterback, see if he can perform under the pressure. Peyton is so systematic that if the Saints are unpredictable then they could crack him. But GO COLTS!

16 Melinda M January 29, 2010 at 2:53 pm

Go team! Either team! Make it a good game!

I don’t really care who wins LOL

17 Victoria N. January 29, 2010 at 3:01 pm

Definitely cheering for the Colts. The Saints are just ruthless!

18 Whitney January 29, 2010 at 3:06 pm

GO COLTS!

19 Daniel January 29, 2010 at 3:07 pm

We’re cheering for the Colts – though my husband is the bigger fan.

20 Celester January 29, 2010 at 3:11 pm

Colts, please!

21 Celester January 29, 2010 at 3:11 pm

Colts!

22 Gypsie January 29, 2010 at 3:48 pm

I love Payton Manning so Go! Colts!

23 Sheila January 29, 2010 at 3:53 pm

I don’t watch football, but would love to win the card. I DO watch a lot of basketball and baseball, but just have never gotten into football. Nice giveaway!

24 Gienah Ghurab January 29, 2010 at 4:03 pm

I just want the card. :)

25 Jenna January 29, 2010 at 4:25 pm

New Orleans, all the way.

26 Rachel Castro January 29, 2010 at 4:26 pm

I don’t have a preference as to who wins, since my poor Broncos didn’t even make it the playoffs.

27 Marva January 29, 2010 at 4:40 pm

Thanks for ther great giveaway! We like both teams, it’s a toss up!

Blessings!!!

28 Mrs. Money January 29, 2010 at 4:40 pm

That veggie pizza is too cute!

I agree with Rachel- I was voting for the Broncos too!

29 Caitlin January 29, 2010 at 4:47 pm

I follow college football more than I follow the NFL, but I’ll be rooting for New Orleans come game day. :)

30 Stephen January 29, 2010 at 4:48 pm

I’m rooting for the Saints. Their quarterback, Drew Brees, went to my high school.

31 Emily January 29, 2010 at 4:57 pm

Saints!

32 Sara January 29, 2010 at 4:59 pm

I’m rooting for the Saints because my roommate’s boyfriend is from New Orleans, and I don’t really have a compelling reason to root for the Colts… :D

33 Susie January 29, 2010 at 5:09 pm

Cheering for the commercials! Thanks for the giveaway.

34 Emily @ Under$1000PerMonth January 29, 2010 at 5:12 pm

I love that veggie pizza idea. That will be a hit!

35 Margie January 29, 2010 at 5:34 pm

Don’t tell my brother in law, but I’m rooting for the Saints. ;)

36 A. Moore January 29, 2010 at 5:49 pm

Since my Patriots didn’t make it, I’m leaning toward the Saints. Not because of the big Colts/Pats rivalry, but because (as the Colts fans liked to say a few years ago) it the Saints’ year. I like cheering for the underdog in cases like these, and this is the Saints’ first trip to the party. :)

37 Gina January 29, 2010 at 5:53 pm

Honestly, I will probably not watch it unless my husband makes me. :) But I could certainly use the gift card!

38 Sylvia January 29, 2010 at 6:24 pm

I just like the food…and the commercials! sylviarj at yahoo dot com

39 Sheena January 29, 2010 at 6:36 pm

Like you I am in it for the food and am not worried about which team wins :) I would love to win the Walmart gift car though…I love that store!

40 Kristy January 29, 2010 at 6:39 pm

I dont care who wins….just want the card!!! But I do like your ideas as I am thinking of ways to spend less this superbowl since we are currently trying to pay down 48k worth of debt. I just found your site and am loving it so far.

41 Lisa January 29, 2010 at 6:59 pm

I’m thinkin’ Colts, but I really watch for the commercials!

42 Sherie Meir January 29, 2010 at 7:21 pm

Hey girl like the post! Going for the Saints to win

43 Jeanne January 29, 2010 at 7:29 pm

I’ve been a Colts fan since I was a little girl, so of course I’m rooting for them to kick some Saint butt!

44 Kristia@Family Balance Sheet January 29, 2010 at 7:42 pm

I’m rooting for the Saints.

45 Mami2jcn January 29, 2010 at 7:51 pm

I don’t follow football…I’d just like to win the card!

46 cwaltz January 29, 2010 at 8:20 pm

I have a real complicated algorythem going for who I root for if the team isn’t the Giants. First, I decide based n which team has the prettier uniform. However, f the other team does a United Way commercial or another worthy cause commericial then they become the team I am rooting for . I know, I know, I’m such a girl. Really if it weren’t for the food I daresay I’d even be in the room to watch.

47 kat January 29, 2010 at 8:25 pm

48 Nancy F January 29, 2010 at 8:27 pm

I just love a good game! And a good Walmart gift card!!

49 Sarah January 29, 2010 at 8:33 pm

Pick me. I’d love to host a killer superbowl party. Great ideas!

50 Judi@FrugalFrolic January 29, 2010 at 9:00 pm

We’ll be watching for the commercials and the fun. I’ll pick the Saints, because I love New Orleans! We’ll probably have some inexpensive tortillas and salsa, some lil smokies I got on sale a while ago, and some veggies from the farmer’s market.

51 Dogfood Provider January 29, 2010 at 10:07 pm

Colts!

52 Emuses January 29, 2010 at 10:17 pm

SAINTS….All the way…..I live close to New Orleans…..we needed this uplift for the city….besides 43 years is time to break the streak…they used to be called by local the Aints but not anymore….We are celebrating in Who Dat Country!!

53 Corrie @ "Cents"able Momma January 29, 2010 at 10:24 pm

I’m rooting for the Colts, because I like Peyton Manning.

54 Aimee W. January 29, 2010 at 11:16 pm

Since the Cowboys didn’t make it all the way, I am all for the Saints. I also really like that this will be their first Superbowl! Thanks!

55 pixie13 January 30, 2010 at 12:46 am

I’m usually a Steelers fan, but since they won’t be playing this year, I’m rooting for the Saints all the way!

56 Raelena January 30, 2010 at 1:11 am

I don’t even watch the Superbowl :)

57 shel January 30, 2010 at 1:14 am

I’m picking the Saints to win…while I’m here in Cleveland, OH my son is now a teacher in New Orleans so we’re going with his new hometown team to win.

58 Helen Hauser January 30, 2010 at 3:21 am

I’m not a big football fan and we had to give up TV after dh lost his job. I’m cheering for the Colts, though, because I know they have a Haitian player whose family is all still in Haiti.

59 Jason E. January 30, 2010 at 5:21 am

Saints, but really just watching the commercials this year1

60 Megan Z January 30, 2010 at 5:51 am

I really wanted the Vikings to be in the race, but since they’re not I guess I’ll be cheering for the Saints since they’ve never made it this far. Thanks for the giveaway!

61 Paige January 30, 2010 at 6:40 am

Colts all the way!! Thanks for the giveaway.

62 Nikki January 30, 2010 at 7:07 am

I’m cheering for the Broncos… to get a new coach. :) Oh, and go Colts!

70 Rose Atwater January 30, 2010 at 8:53 am

I’m pulling for the Saints…although I like the Colts too!

71 Amy Dunn January 30, 2010 at 8:54 am

We’re for the Saints and the whole city of New Orleans. They deserve it. I know that has nothing to do with the game of football, but, oh well!
Thanks for the great giveaway opportunity!

72 Jenn R January 30, 2010 at 9:00 am

I will be pulling for the Saints..even though I’m WAY bummed my Vikings lost..I have dear friends who are Saints fans..that live in Louisiana and attend the games…so if I want to remain their friends, I have to pull for them! Thanks for the opportunity to win a gift card.

73 Melissa January 30, 2010 at 9:01 am

I actually like both teams but I’m rooting for the Colts! Big Peyton Manning fan :)

74 Barb January 30, 2010 at 9:02 am

I don’t care who wins. I just like to watch the commercials. I’m a semi Chiefs fan.

76 Bobbi January 30, 2010 at 9:05 am

I will be rooting for the Colts! Thanks for the giveaway. :) Good luck Colts.

77 Angelsong January 30, 2010 at 9:07 am

Like you, I’m not a football fan, but I’d like to see the Saints win; it would be a real “post-Katrina” boost for New Orleans. Another frugal food for a party: Chili!

78 Pam Bridger January 30, 2010 at 9:11 am

Down here in Texas, most people are rooting for the Saints, although I really don’t care much, but I sure could use that gift card!!! Thanks!!!

79 stephanie January 30, 2010 at 9:19 am

Neither–I hate football!

80 gina January 30, 2010 at 9:25 am

Well, I’m sad the Jets didn’t make it this year. I think I would like to see the Saint’s win–something nice for New Orleans!

81 Janice January 30, 2010 at 9:38 am

Saints if I have to pick a team – not really into pro football. High school football is the best.

Being from Ohio and having seen the Colts stadium last summer, we are rooting for our neighbors, the Colts.

85 Louise January 30, 2010 at 10:22 am

Saints…..New Orleans is due for a celebration!

86 Denni January 30, 2010 at 10:22 am

The Saints because the people of New Orleans have been ignored long enough.

87 Kimberly in NC January 30, 2010 at 10:24 am

Must be honest….I don’t care who wins. I love a good party with friends no matter the reason, though and I would love a giftcard.

88 Marj McClendon January 30, 2010 at 10:28 am

I’m rooting for the underdog……..whichever one that is. We have no TV, but I always go for the underdog.

89 Pat January 30, 2010 at 10:39 am

Being from Wisconsin I am a Packers fan all the way, but since they didnt make it this time, I am all for the Saints. I am not so much interested in football, but enjoy the atmosphere of the game, the parties, the spirit, and it seems that everybody forgets their problems for a couple of hours. Enjoy the game, and I hope I win the gift card.

90 Judy January 30, 2010 at 11:04 am

Frankly, our team isn’t in it this year, but it’s still a great excuse to have a little party just with my husband and kids. It’s just for us to have fun and fun food!

Thanks for the Walmart list.

91 Terri January 30, 2010 at 11:21 am

No TV, no game, no party this year! For some reason when you 8 children you don’t get invited to the SuperBowl Parties! But that’s ok everyday is a party when you have 8 children, lol!

92 Michele January 30, 2010 at 11:23 am

Saints!

93 Priscilla January 30, 2010 at 11:25 am

Thanks for the Walmart gift card giveaway. I understand what Terri said, as we have 6 children. I’m not sure which team we’ll be cheering on. I’m not a huge sports fan. My husband & 5 boys are into sports =) so, the SuperBowl game will be watched.

We live in WI but would have cheered for the Vikings, if they had won that last game. We have family in MN and they make sure our children have Vikings tops to wear.

94 Missy Weston January 30, 2010 at 11:29 am

I will of course hope that the COLTS win as I am from Indiana..hopefully it is a good game!!!

95 Sue January 30, 2010 at 11:40 am

Not rooting for either team this year but I always watch just for the innovative ads! Just hope it is a close game, even if I’m not partial to either it does make it much more fun.

100 Babs January 30, 2010 at 12:53 pm

Go Colts! Looking forward to the party with family, friends and game food! Also love the commercials!

101 jan January 30, 2010 at 1:17 pm

Colts.
I live in Indiana and the Colts have done summer training in Terre Haute, In, near my hometown. I will not be completely disappointed if Saints when as I did live in New Orleans when the Saints were at their low peak.

102 boomeyers January 30, 2010 at 1:20 pm

I am rooting for the Colts! I think Minnesota should have won, so I want New Orleans to lose!!

103 Gerry January 30, 2010 at 1:27 pm

I’d like a good football game. I like both teams.

104 Barb January 30, 2010 at 1:32 pm

Well, I live in Anchorage, Ak, so can’t say as I have a real preference, maybe the Saints, since I think New Orleans could use some good news! Thanks for doing this!

105 Carrie January 30, 2010 at 1:39 pm

110 karen miller January 30, 2010 at 3:04 pm

I would just love the card!

111 Denise January 30, 2010 at 3:34 pm

I would love for the Saints to win. Even though I live in Idaho, I think it would boost morale in New Orleans, especially after what happened with Hurricane Katrina.

112 Lynn January 30, 2010 at 3:36 pm

Peyton is the MANning! I’m for the Colts.

113 Amanda Starr January 30, 2010 at 4:01 pm

127 Katelyn Jackson January 31, 2010 at 8:34 am

While I don’t mind watching football, I’m not a huge fan. The husband loves the Texans. But since it’s Colts v. Saints I’d have to say Let’s Go Saints! The gathering at our house keeps growing thanks to hubby’s welcoming nature so that card would certainly come in handy trying to feed everyone. :) Thanks for a great website!

128 Andrea January 31, 2010 at 8:52 am

I really don’t care who wins… I’m only in it for the commercials =)

Saints! I’m from Baltimore and we still haven’t forgiven them for sneaking out of town. Plus I graduated from the University of New Orleans. And New Orleans needs a boost after all they’ve been through these past years!

131 Zoie January 31, 2010 at 11:14 am

Let’s go Colts.

134 Mar January 31, 2010 at 3:34 pm

I’m rooting for the Colts. They beat the Ravens, the team for which I root, so go Colts!

I have no personal preference on the Super Bowl winner. However, my grandsons have a bet going. If the Saints win, the 12 & 14 year olds must go to school with their hair colored gold & black. If the Colts win, the 9 year old must get a #2 Buzz cut. We can’t wait!!

Colts, only because thats my mothers team ive never been to much into football but always had to watch it on sundays.

142 Danielle February 1, 2010 at 6:14 am

Not a football fan at all! But my family wants the Colts to win. I just would love to win the card! :)

I’m not a sports fan but I like watching the commercials during the Super Bowl! I’d love to win the gift card. A lifetime ago I would go to Superbowl parties with friends and my favorite thing to bring was chocolate covered strawberries.

144 Ria February 1, 2010 at 6:32 am

Having no cable access and not having much interest in sports, I didn’t even know it was time for the Superbowl until I read this post. Sometimes I feel pretty out of the loop with the media world!

145 Kymm February 1, 2010 at 6:35 am

I’d love to win the card! My son and I watch every year and we pick whatever team he feels like rooting for. We make food, play games and watch the game on tv, always fun!

146 Ivette February 1, 2010 at 7:08 am

I am for the Saints! Who Dat!

147 Nancy February 1, 2010 at 7:11 am

Truthfully, I don’t care who wins, I just want the gift card! :)

148 Julie P February 1, 2010 at 8:09 am

No interest in pro football… but I love a good gift card!

149 Melissa February 1, 2010 at 8:14 am

I am pulling for the Colts. Not that I have a strong tie to the team as my favorites aren’t in the superbowl, but that’s who we will be pulling for.

My two year old will just be excited that there will be football game on. Is it in the male dna? I didn’t expect him to be into football so early…

I’ve been rooting for the Saints all year. I became of fan of theirs when I watched them beat the Giants. I live in Kentucky, and although the Colts are popular, they’ve already had their turn. Drew Brees deserves a win, as well as the city of New Orleans. Go Saints!

151 Sherri L February 1, 2010 at 8:50 am

Definitely cheering for the Colts. I have great respect for Manning’s team leadership and his positive example as a role model for young people. Go Colts!

152 Jennifer S February 1, 2010 at 9:15 am

Colts. I love Peyton Manning

153 Deb February 1, 2010 at 9:29 am

I don’t have a dog in this fight so let the best team win :)

154 Crystal February 1, 2010 at 9:30 am

I do not watch football! I might watch just for the halftime show thought!

155 Mikki February 1, 2010 at 9:55 am

Even though I love Peyton Manning, I’m going to cheer on the Saints!

156 Michelle H. February 1, 2010 at 10:28 am

Count me in! I guess I’m rooting for the Saints –I’m not a football fan but I like the name!

157 Gerri C February 1, 2010 at 11:48 am

I’m rooting for the Colt’s! But only because the very BEST team…the Viking’s got beat by the refs!!!

158 Andrea February 1, 2010 at 12:43 pm

Go Saints!!!! (Although if the Colts were playing any other team I would root for them.)

159 Kelley February 1, 2010 at 12:51 pm

Great post! And thanks for the receipe on the Victory Veggie Pizza. We’re rooting for Peyton and the Colts!

160 Ben February 1, 2010 at 2:05 pm

Colts all the way!

161 Steven February 1, 2010 at 2:43 pm

I dont really care either way. I am much more a fan of college ball.

162 Tracey February 1, 2010 at 3:22 pm

I love watching football for the sheer sport of it. The great plays, the fantastic blunders, and of course, the commercials. Good luck to both teams — should be a great game!

163 Cheryl February 1, 2010 at 4:38 pm

I will cheer for the Saints, I always cheer for the underdog when my team is not in it!

164 Carol Duncan February 1, 2010 at 7:19 pm

I think the Colts will win, although it would be nice for the Saints to pull through for New Orleans. I would love to throw a superbowl party using your gracious gift. It’s a great time to celebrate even if I don’t win anything. Go teams!

165 Ali February 1, 2010 at 8:50 pm

Go Saints!!

Lynnae, I just started listening to on my iPod on Frugalcoast2coast. I love it! You and Jen need to start up again!

I’m rooting for the Saints because Drew Brees went to the same high school as I did here in Austin, TX. I’m mostly just excited for the commercials though.

167 Amy February 2, 2010 at 7:54 am

I honestly didn’t even know who was playing in the Super Bowl until I read it in your post. The only part that interest me is the commercials.

168 Shannon February 2, 2010 at 9:28 am

Hi! I just found your blog when I was searching for blogs about budgeting. Thanks for your tips! I am a newbie budgeter.

Anyway, I don’t really follow football, but we always watch the Superbowl anyway because my husband is in advertising and wants to watch the commercials. We usually end up rooting for whichever team is considered the underdog.

I could definitely use the Walmart GC to boost my grocery stockpile without going over my food budget! Happy Superbowl week/end!

169 alia February 2, 2010 at 10:09 am

i would pick the saints – but mostly i just like watching the commercials & grazing on the snacks all evening!

170 Erica February 2, 2010 at 10:24 am

I am rooting for the Colts, however, my son is rooting for the Saints. So it should be a very interesting and entertaining Super Bowl. Thanks for the great giveaway!!

171 lio fralop February 2, 2010 at 3:35 pm

Did I get in too late for the drawing? I only watch the superbowl for the adverts–American football is just too slow. But I think I’d favour the Saints just because Indiana’s weird (their elected officials debate over silly things like time: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_in_Indiana#Controversy). I was just referred to your blog from a friend. Keep up the good work.

172 Whitney February 3, 2010 at 9:04 pm

It is hard to pick. I love Peyton, but I would also like to see the Saints win!
