Tightwad Tuesday: Read to Your Children

Christmas Reading

Today is December 1, the beginning of our 24 nights of reading tradition.  Since I posted about it last year, I’m not going to repeat the post this year.  But if you’re interested in the tradition, you can find out more about the 24 books of Christmas here.

Even if you’re not doing 24 nights of Christmas stories, this is still a great time of year to read to your children!  The holidays often get so busy, that you often run out of time to spend with your family…the ones who mean the most to you.  Yes, it’s a bit backward, but without careful planning, time can get away from you.

We combat the holiday business by making time to read every night.  And Christmas books are so much fun!  In addition to our usual storybooks, we’re going to be reading the following before Christmas Day:

We checked out the last three books on the list from the library, so they didn’t cost a thing!  That’s why I like reading.  Armed with just a library card, you can open up new worlds for your children and yourself, and you make memories with your children that will last much longer than the toy under the Christmas tree.

What are you reading this holiday season?

We just got our Christmas books out this weekend. I like Jan Brett’s books. I like the library too, but I want to start collecting some quality books for the kids. I’ll check Goodwill or yard sales.

With some of my Grandchildren, last Monday night I started the Monday night free Movies with Popcorn series at our local library. Our first movie was “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and last night was “The Polar Express”, which I had NOT seen – believe it or not. There are 6 Monday nights of Christmas movies ! Then we checked some books out of the library.

While I don’t have the grandkids every night, I do have them every Saturday night, and we will take advantage of some of the Christmas books for our nightly read. This is a good tradition!

We read Dylan Thomas’ “A Child’s Christmas in Wales” on Christmas Eve.

Very good suggestion!
“Christmas Trees” by Robert Frost is also a favorite of mine.

I just got my stack of Christmas stories from the library. I had to restrain myself from getting more, since we can only read so much in one week (sigh) and will have three more weeks after that! We also borrowed Christmas music from the library. My library card is one of my most prized possessions.

What a great idea! We are doing Christmas movies everyday. Since my 3 youngest homeschool, we arrange our schoolyear to be off the month of December and just enjoy the season together. We have a vast collection of movies & look forward to this (we also do Christmas in July & watch our movies then too). My youngest is 13, so reading storybooks is not “cool” right now, but I am saving all the books to share with any grandchildren the Lord blesses us with!

There’s one book I read when I was little about two boys. The younger brother had leukemia. I think it had to do with Christmas cowboy boots. So sad, but so beautiful.

We are working on weaning my son’s fiance’s 4-year-old off television. The cool part is, he just loves being read to! This past weekend we read a Thanksgiving Arthur book and started on the books he picked out at the library with me.

Great suggestions but don’t isolate it to the Holidays…

I traveled often when the kids were young. Our routine was to purchase two copies of every book. Each night I would read a chapter or two to our kids while they followed along with their books. By age 4-1/2 my son was reading Harry Potter to me. My kids are now great students and read faster with better comprehension than myself.

You cannot read enough to your kids!
