Last week I mentioned that this time of year is when a lot of people let their budgets slip a bit. The easiest way to stay on track with your budget is to have an easy and effective way to keep track of your budget.
My favorite budgeting tool is YNAB Pro. I’ve been using it for a couple of years now, and when I’m consistent about using it, I can see a positive difference in my spending habits.
The Basis of YNAB
YNAB (or You Need a Budget) is based on four rules.
- Live on Last Month’s Income
- Give Every Dollar a Job
- Prepare for Rain
- Roll with the Punches
The software is really set up to help you through these four steps, so you step away from the financial edge of disaster and are prepared for anything that comes your way. Of course you have to do the hard work, but YNAB does a good job of guiding you.
Stop Living Paycheck to Paycheck
YNAB is set up to help you live on last month’s income, rather than living paycheck to paycheck. For a new user, who is currently living paycheck to paycheck, you enter all of your income as supplemental, rather than regular, income. Every month you put money toward your buffer, until one day you have a month’s worth of income as a buffer. It takes a while to get there, but it’s worth it.
Once you have a month’s worth of income as a buffer, you enter your monthly income as regular income. That income will show up as available to spend next month, not this month. So every month you have at least a month’s income in reserves.
Ideally, of course, you want to have three to six months worth of expenses as an emergency fund, but if you’re currently living paycheck to paycheck, having a month in reserve makes a huge difference.
Give Every Dollar a Job
Jesse Mecham, the creator of YNAB, believes that every dollar should have an assigned job. Dave Ramsey would say the same. And I agree.
If you don’t have a plan for your money, it tends to evaporate a dollar here and a dollar there, instead of helping you reach your goals. When I’m consistently keeping up with my budget, I do a better job of paying down my debt. No matter how committed I am to getting out of debt, when I let the budget slide, I don’t do as well, because I don’t see the results.
By keeping track of my budget in an easy to use software like YNAB, I easily see where my money is going and where I’m overspending. I can nip bad habits in the bud and get back on track right away.
Prepare for Rain
I live in Oregon. And every year, it rains. Without fail. I never know what day the rain will start, but I know it’s coming.
It’s the same way with finances. Everything is going smoothly for a while, and then suddenly the rain starts. Medical bills. Car repairs. A leaky roof. An unexpected expense blows the budget.
I recently experienced this as last week our car needed new tires (which we were anticipating) and then the radiator cracked (which we weren’t anticipating). We had an emergency fund to cover the expense, but it took a big hit.
And that’s the meaning of Rule 3. Unexpected expenses will come. So be prepared. In YNAB you are encouraged to save an emergency fund above and beyond the one month of income you have tucked away. Know the expenses are coming and have the funds on hand to cover them.
Roll With the Punches
No budget is perfect 100% of the time. Overspending happens. But what are you going to do about it?
Well, if you overspend one month, take the overspent amount from your available income the next month to make it even. YNAB automatically calculates this for you, so you can see how much money you have available in each budget category currently, and how much is available next month.
And if the amount you have budgeted in a certain category really isn’t working for you, it’s easy to adjust your budget to reflect a new amount.
YNAB Pro/YNAB 3 Giveaway
This post is getting long, so I’ll save the rest of it for another day. But before I sign off, I have an exciting giveaway!
I’m giving away one copy of YNAB Pro, worth $49.95! But even more exciting than that is the fact that YNAB 3 is coming out soon, and the winner will get a free upgrade when YNAB 3 is released! YNAB 3 will include lots of cool upgrades, and it will be Mac compatible, so you Mac users, feel free to enter the giveaway, too! I’ll be writing about YNAB 3 later this week, so stay tuned.

If you tweet or write a post, please leave a link to your tweet or post, so I can make sure the entry is legitimate. I hate to have to do that, but it’s necessary.
I’ll close comments next Sunday at noon PST and draw a winner with a random number generator. The winner will have three days to contact me, or I will draw a new winner.
For those of you who can’t wait for the contest to end, you can get 10% off your copy of YNAB Pro by using the code “beingfrugal” (without the quotes…good through the end of November). Wow, this is awesome! I’ve tried mint and had ok results but I’d love to have something to do better budgeting with. Thanks, Lynnae!
I have been using Quicken since I bought my first computer back in 1996. Maybe it is time to try a new program.
Thanks.
I tend to like to do budgets myself, but lately we have been going over budget almost every month, and I think I could definitely use software to set more concrete money rules. :)
I’ve tried other software, but could never stick with it long enough to really see a difference. This sounds like something I could work with!
Pick me please :)
I use Quicken but have been having problems with it lately for example little black boxes all around the icons, and quicken is unable to figure out the problem I would love a copy of YNAB maybe that would fix my problems.
Count me in !
I’ve been using Quicken for years, but I find it doesn’t really help me budget, just track where I spent the money. I’m interested in trying something new.
INMS (I Need More Software) !
I would love to win!
Nice giveaway!
I would so love to win! I never heard of this software until reading your blog this morning and it sounds great!
I bookmarked the link and may get it someday when I feel it’s worth the cost. Right now, we’re winging it with some Excel spreadsheets I created that has the same philosophy as the software you mentioned (such as “Live on Last Month’s Income”).
I’d love this software! I am starting grad school, and this would make it so much easier for me to set aside the proper amount for tuition while also meeting my other obligations.
I could really use this! Thanks for the chance!
Please enter me! :)
I’ve also tweeted the giveaway!
I’ve used Quicken for years, but it doesn’t work well for me for budgeting purposes. Would love to try a new approach (I currently just write out my budget on a piece of paper, but it’s ver loose).
I have been using Microsoft Money for several years, and I’d love to try a new program. Thanks for the giveaway.
Sounds like a very useful tool. I’d love to try it!
I would love to try it, I definitely need a new budgeting tool!
I’ve been contemplating buying this for the past month. Would love to be the winner!!!
I would love to get this software. I currently use an excel spreadsheet and am looking to upgrade!
I would love to win the WNAB software!! I really need help with budgeting!
Could definatly use this!! Need Help!!
Here’s my entry!
I need new budget software, I don’t know where to put the emergency or extra purchases that aren’t in my spreadsheet.
I like the four rules YNAB is based on. Sounds like the type of budget software I have been looking for. Thank you for the chance to win a copy of the software.
I didn’t really want to read about budgeting (ostrich complex), but I’m so glad I did. As I read, I started to get excited thinking that maybe this time I could really do this. I keep a budget on Excel, but I love the idea YNAB has of living on last month’s paycheck. I’m going to check out the free trial. Thank you!
I would love to win this. I enjoy reading your post. Susan
As an owner of a very outdated version of the now retired Microsoft Money, I would love to win this copy of YNAB. Thanks for offering this giveaway. jgs0925 at gmail dot com
I am using nothing and I can tell. This would be a great tool to figure out where I am spending.
I have heard about this software for some time, but as a Mac user it was not an option to me. I would love to try it now that it will be available on Mac.
I would love to try something more enhanced than my simplistic excel spreadsheet. Thanks, Lynnae!
I tweeted!!!
I could really use this. I currently do not live on a budget and it shows. I’m getting married this Friday and this would be great to start out our married financial life. Thank you for the giveaway.

This sounds like a good application. I would definitely use it, and it should help with our budget, once we get that buffer going.
Sounds like a great budgeting tool!
I have been using Quicken and find that some times the budgets get a little too restricting. I would love to try YNAB to see if the living paycheck to paycheck cycle ends itself. I love this site “being frugal” has saved me so much money.
I budget just suing a spreadsheet, but this offer is enticing. Time to try something new?
I used to use Quicken but now that I’m married we just have a very simple excel sheet and then i keep track of what bills were paid when in a txt file.
I think of buying this program after my bills have been paid, when I have no money left…ugh!
I use Pear Budget, which you mentioned positively in a previous post, but I like the idea of overages being tracked from month to month in YNAB!
I’m excited that the new YNAB will be Mac friendly! I’d love to try it out.
I’m going through Crown Financial’s Leading Stewards Course and am learning wonderful truths about wise money management. Of course, one key is a good solid budget. I still don’t have a system– this one sounds interesting but am wondering which one you recommend more for a new ‘budgeter’: Pear Budget or YNAB?
Hope to win the giveaway to give YNAB a chance.
Thanks.
I use my own spreadsheet now. YNAB captures everything I’ve wanted to do and more.
Hi! I’ve been working on my budget as of late and am still in the early part of tweaking and reworking. I love the tenants of this software–what a great post! Thanks!
I’ve heard good things about YNAB
I desperately need some help with getting our budget under control and this would be fantastic!
Pick me! :)
Just like many other who have commented, I’ve used Quicken since it first version, and it’s wonderful for tracking, but I’ve NEVER been able to make a user-friendly budget with it. Please enter me for the contest! Thanks! ;-)
