On October 8th, people are going to be reading. A lot of people. Walmart and Jumpstart are partnering to encourage people to Read for the Record.
I know you’re wondering what this is all about and what it has to do with finance and frugality. Here’s the bottom line. Too many low income children grow up without age appropriate books in their home. Literacy is important in getting ahead in life, and Reading for the Record seeks to give kids a head start in becoming literate.
Reading for the Record
Reading for the Record will take place on October 8, 2009. To bring awareness of the importance of childhood literacy, we will be trying to break the record for the number of people who read Eric Carle’s book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar on the same day.
To participate, pledge to read The Very Hungry Caterpillar on October 8. If you don’t already own a copy of the book, you can buy one for $8 at Walmart. Through October 8, Walmart will be donating the proceeds from sales of these specially marked books to the Jumpstart Program.
You can also participate by sponsoring books for children whose parents can’t afford them.
Walmart and Jumpstart will be holding a Twitter Party on September 24 from 9-11 p.m. EST to promote the event. Every 100th retweet of the tag #JUMPSTART will win a copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. 500 copies will be given away!
I’m Also Giving Away a Copy
I also have a copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar to give away. To enter, just leave a comment with the name of your favorite children’s book. To receive a second entry, go pledge to read on October 8, and then come back here and leave a second comment, letting me know that you pledged.
The giveaway will be closed at noon PST on September 30. The winner will have 48 hours to contact me with their mailing info. Giveaway is open to the residents of the U.S. only.
Remember leave one comment with the name of your favorite children’s book and a second comment after you’ve pledged to read!
I hope you’ll be reading with me on October 8!

I love the Very Hungry Caterpillar! (already have it so you don’t have to enter me). One of my favorites is Don’t Let The Pigeon Drive the Bus! Lots of fun. And just read Oh, the Places You’ll Go by Suess. That’s a great one for all ages.
Sounds like a great program.
My favorite kids book is Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. But you can’t go wrong with anything by Dr. Seuss!
I made my parents read me Dr Seuss’ The Sleep Book, a little- known and looong book by him, over and over.
When I was little, my favorite was “The Monster at the End of This Book.” It is a Sesame Street book with Grover. Now that I teach kinder, I read it to my kids…and I do a decent Grover voice, if I must say so myself :)
My kids could never get enough of The Snowy Day.
“You’ve pledged to read” I pledged!
My very favorite childrens book of all time is The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. Its a great book to give to a small child and a wonderful book to give to a mom of a teenager.
My favorite book growing up was “But No Elephants” by Jerry Smath. My daughter loves “But not the Hippopotamus” by Sandra Boyton which is very similar but much shorter!
“A Child’s Garden of Verses” by Robert Louis Stevenson and “Aesop’s Fables”.
I always loved Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett. It had such wonderful pictures too.
I use to love ” Can I Help”.
I think my faovorite book to read to my kids is Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, followed closely by the Very Hingry Caterpillar and Goodnight Moon!
Thanks!
I love The Sailor Dog and The Bear and the Boat.
My favorite is “Love You Forever” and I also enjoy the Critter series. :)
My favorite children’s book is “The Polar Express” and “Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me.” Thanks for the chance to win.
I’ve been trying to build up our kids’ books library! Our current favorite is Goodnight Moon, and finding the mouse. But my personal favorite is Winnie the Pooh :)
my pick, “Is Your Mama a Lama?” Thanks for the chance to win The Hungry Caterpillar. We read that recently (borrowed from public library) & it quickly became my youngest 3 favorite. We would love to have our own copy!
I LOVE The Very Hungry Caterpillar, I am in school for Elementary Education and I am currently working on an in clas library…this would be a great addition. Thanks!! I pledge to read this on Oct 8.
My whole family LOVES the book Arnie the Doughnut. It is so cute and funny for adults and kids alike. If you can listen to the recorded book, it is great as well.
I really like Where the Wild Things Are. My 3yo is more a fan of Llama Llama Mad at Mama.
My son is 7 months old, and our favorite book right now is Barnyard Dance by Sandra Boynton!
The Very Hungry Caterpillar is my favorite!!! Oddly enough, I own the book in Japanese (I don’t know how to read or speak Japanese), but not English!!! Corduroy is my second favorite.
The Hungry Caterpillar is a fun read with the kids. Goodnight Moon is another classic for them.
M y all time favorite book is I spy numbers I use it a lot in my family child care.
My favorite kids books are by Sandra Boyton. I really can’t pick a favorite of the bunch – though maybe Barnyard Dance. I love that they have a rhythm to them that keeps even the youngest of kids attention. And now that my oldest is in the earliest stages of reading herself the rhythm and illustrations help her to “read” them by herself or to her little brother – perfect!
My favorite kids bookis Goodnight Moon and any Mercer Mayer Little Critter Books.
My favorite kids books is I Need My Monster by Amanda Noll.
My favorite children’s book is “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs”. I’m kind of bummed that they changed a lot of the book around when they made the new movie, but then again…it’s amazing to make a full feature length movie out of a 20 page childrens book.
My favorite books are “Mr. Peabody’s Apples” by Madonna, and “Enemy Pie” by Derek Munson. Both of these books teach important life lessons. We will be reading “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” at Talent Elementary on Oct. 8th.
Love to read “Pigsty” by Mark Teague to my kids.
My 19 month old LOVES all of our Eric Carlyle books. Right now, her fav is the Grouchy Ladybug. Thanks for the chance to win.
I always loved Dr. Suess when I was little. “Are you my Mother?” was my favorite. “The Giving Tree” was another favorite (and a great message). We don’t own “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”, for my 2.5 year old, so I’d love the chance to own it…
Just pledged to read! We’ll check the book out of the library…:)
I loved this book as a kid! And any Dr. Seuss book is still my favorite.
I will always have a special place in my heart for Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Suess. My oldest daughter could “read” that book before she could read! I love it!
I also pledged!
One of the classics that my kids could never hear often enough is Green Eggs and Ham. We read it over and over again to them. Now with my grandson, we are repeating the tradition. I know that he would love The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Please enter me into the contest.
