On October 8th, people are going to be reading. A lot of people. Walmart and Jumpstart are partnering to encourage people to Read for the Record.
I know you’re wondering what this is all about and what it has to do with finance and frugality. Here’s the bottom line. Too many low income children grow up without age appropriate books in their home. Literacy is important in getting ahead in life, and Reading for the Record seeks to give kids a head start in becoming literate.
Reading for the Record
Reading for the Record will take place on October 8, 2009. To bring awareness of the importance of childhood literacy, we will be trying to break the record for the number of people who read Eric Carle’s book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar on the same day.
To participate, pledge to read The Very Hungry Caterpillar on October 8. If you don’t already own a copy of the book, you can buy one for $8 at Walmart. Through October 8, Walmart will be donating the proceeds from sales of these specially marked books to the Jumpstart Program.
You can also participate by sponsoring books for children whose parents can’t afford them.
Walmart and Jumpstart will be holding a Twitter Party on September 24 from 9-11 p.m. EST to promote the event. Every 100th retweet of the tag #JUMPSTART will win a copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. 500 copies will be given away!
I’m Also Giving Away a Copy
I also have a copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar to give away. To enter, just leave a comment with the name of your favorite children’s book. To receive a second entry, go pledge to read on October 8, and then come back here and leave a second comment, letting me know that you pledged.
The giveaway will be closed at noon PST on September 30. The winner will have 48 hours to contact me with their mailing info. Giveaway is open to the residents of the U.S. only.
Remember leave one comment with the name of your favorite children’s book and a second comment after you’ve pledged to read!
I hope you’ll be reading with me on October 8!
