And leaving the $10 fee is fine and fair. It was not their fault, nor was it yours. You were a good customer with a good history. Additionally, all that returning of checks and whatnot is fully automated and once a check passes a teller's hands it's not touched or seen by a human again. So those fees are merely punitive and they can afford to credit them - what they can't afford is to lose a customer. Good that they realize this.
