My Facebook Profile Has Been Hacked

by Lynnae on August 24, 2009 · 21 comments

Hi all!  I just wanted you to know I’m fine.  Apparently somewhere in the last half hour or so, someone hacked my Facebook account and posted that I swallowed a bottle of pills.  It’s not true.

I was just minding my own business, vegging out, when a friend called to see what was up.  Thanks Lisa!

Anyway, I’m trying to figure out what to do about my facebook account, but in the meanwhile, know that I am perfectly A-OK!

And if anyone knows how I can take care of this facebook problem, feel free to let me know!  It’s a little disconcerting to know that someone has access to my account!

It’s possible you just left it running somewhere at a public place. Anyways, to be safe, if the “crook” left anything identifiable such as a URL, report it to Facebook, otherwise the simple “Change your password” should work in this situation.

According to facebook:
My account has been hacked by another user.
If you believe that your account has been hacked, make sure that the email associated with your account is secure.

If you’re having trouble logging in with your normal email and password, try resetting your password using the link on the login page. An email will be sent to you with steps for completing the process.

If the email on your account has been changed, or if you are unable to access your profile, please send us information about the account so we can look into it further and hopefully restore access. Please submit your report here. (here is the link for “here”: http://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=account_hacked)

I would change the password, and then, once you know that person is out, change it again :)

Thanks, all. I’m back in, and I’ve changed the password, though I’ll probably change it again.

The only time I access facebook is from my own computer, so I’m not sure how they got in. Unfortunately this is a scam that seems to be going around right now. So make sure your passwords are secure, everyone. Or your relaxing evening could turn into mad facebook posts and phone calls to the police!

But I’m glad I have friends who care.

Also be sure to change passwords on your associated email account, as well as the password reminder question if there is one.

Sorry that happened!

Ah, the reminder question. That’s a good idea. I changed my email passwords already.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the craigslist scammers that contacted me earlier today.

That’s crazy. Glad you got it fixed and I’m glad it wasn’t true!

Lynnae,

News came out today or yesterday that Facebook has disabled several apps that were phishing. The link can be found here:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-27080_3-10314183-245.html

Also, Facebook and Twitter have been caught in a cyberwar between some people who have been hacking in to get at each other. Other peoples’ accounts have suffered.

Facebook apps can be a real problem. As I result, I never install FB apps because it can lead to huge problems. A friend of mine who is the President of Bethany University had a rogue FB app send out links to pornographic sites from his FB account.

Also, make sure you are protected against viruses, spyware, malware and keystroke loggers. I recommend Norton Internet Security 2009 version, as that updates itself automatically every few minutes and use less memory and resources than previous versions. If you are infected, there are other tools I would recommend to remove the junk.

Finally, I would consider changing browsers from Internet Explorer to Firefox if you haven’t already done so. I recently made the switch and have found Firefox to be a more secure browser. Also, I love the functionality that can be added to Firefox via add-ons.

Feel free to call or email me if you have any questions. I would be happy to help you!

This is one of the reasons I completely decided against opening a facebook or twitter account. It means giving people who might not have the best intents access to personal information and an opportunity to identity steal. As promising as a whopper or a pint of starbucks ice cream is it isn’t nearly as promising as avoiding the drama.

I’m sorry that this happened to you and hope that everything settles down for you.

It’s ridiculous the mean things that people will do. I’m headed right over to change my password. Thanks Lynnae :)

Some fucker hacked my facebook account last week and I managed to find out it was some scum from America.

Research
Apparently there are lots of ways to hack someones facebook. I thought i’ld do a bit of research to hopefully protect my account.

Protect
The biggest and best way is to hide your e-mail, and hide the ability for the scum to search your name, also avoid weird links via fb message

New Software
There is many hacking softwares out there that works by simply by typing your fb e-mail address, this software can generate your password in a matter of secs/mins.

Not only is this for facebook, but for hotmail and twitter too.

the hacker hacked my account to get my zynga poker chips amounting 501.7M…… but my friends and buddies in poker said that the chips is still the same. I think zynga knows that it was hacked because of ISP address. The hacker is from another country…
