Tightwad Tuesday: Frugal End of Summer Celebrations

As the start of school nears, it’s fun to have one last summer hurrah.  Something to celebrate the summer break.  A good note on which to end summer vacation.  But something frugal.

Here are some inexpensive, easy activities that will make the end of summer break memorable.

~Camp out in the backyard. No camping fees required.  Just pitch a tent in the yard, grab some sleeping bags and a flashlight, and have a great camping experience.  Tell stories in the dark.  Watch the stars.  Talk about your summer memories.  Kids love camping, and backyard camping is fun, frugal, and a lot less work than hauling supplies to a campsite!

~Picnic in the park. Pack a picnic lunch and a blanket, and take the kids down to the park to play.  To make it an even bigger celebration, invite your kids’ friends and their families.  You can have some adult conversation, while the kids get in one last park day before school starts.

~Read a favorite book. I don’t know what it’s like where you live.  But it’s supposed to be 100+ degrees out here this week.  So I wanted to give an indoor option.  Pull out a family favorite book.  Maybe Charlott’e’s Web.  Or Little House on the Prairie.  And read it together as a family.  You’ll all appreciate the family time, and it will be fun to re-read a book from your childhood.

~Have a backyard barbeque. Invite your friends and their kids over, have everyone bring a side dish, and barbeque burgers.  You can get inexpensive pre-made hamburger patties at Costco.  Enjoy hanging out with your friends and watching the kids play, before the busy school year schedule makes it difficult to get together.

Do you do anything special at the end of the summer?  What?

I suppose it’s that time of year! We always wind up the summer with our church picnic, but I do want to fit in a few more park mornings, a beach day, and some more picnics, especially breakfast picnics. And a campfire in our fire pit.

And a massive but frugal shopping spree for school supplies at Walmart, with options and quantities picked out from the flyer in advance.

Thanks for reminding me!

I love all of these ideas! I happen to have all of these (except camping since I do’nt have a backyard) on my list for the remainder of summer. BBQ this weekend, hike/picnic mid next week and rereading the Twilight series to get ready for the upcoming movie!

Celebrate the fact that the river is ALMOST warm enough to go swimming in…. and taking the beach towels and a picnic down to the river and trying to swim in it :)

Do some lazy fishing and do some reading in the sunshine tanning with a nice cold drink :)

We don’t get “warm” here on the coast very often – so tend to enjoy it at the river when it happens ! Good luck with your heat advisory over there! Whew! Our high is only expected to be 80 today and 85 tomorrow, so I think I can deal with that – but that’s my Limit!

Your post put a sense of urgency on me to enjoy my summer more while it still lasts, so i’ll try to squeeze in at least one more kayak trip

Nice tips! We pack lunches and head to the park or the beach with the kids– always a good time.
