I buy a laundry basket (on sale of course) and fill it with pantry items. Things like spices, crackers, spaghetti, peanut butter, gravies. I even add paper towels, tea bags, a coupon file, cleaning supplies. Anything you can think of that you would reach for if you were in your own home. The bride to be always loves this gift. And I have loads of fun filling it up.

A nice sentimental gift to give them would be a bottle of wine not to be opened until the 10th anniversary. Along with it you can attach a nice poem about marriage. I had given this gift to a friend for her wedding along with a CD of the Chicago Wedding Band that played at her reception. So for 10 years they can be reminded of their wedding day with the wine bottle, and for the rest of their lives they can keep that CD that has songs from their wedding. I think incorporating a picnic basket into this would be cute. You could add more to your gift, and everything can be used.

I like to shop clearance sales for good “maybe” wedding gifts. The gardening tool set and the “every holiday” theme gift are some of my favorites (one item to decorate with for each holiday, picked up in an end-of-season sale). Once I even gave a big tub full of homemade cleaning supplies, ingredients and recipes to make more!

We frequently give towels; they seem to be on most people’s registries. The casserole dish idea is great: 10 years later, I still love the casserole dish we got that came with a lid and a zippered fabric carrier with hot and cold packs that fit in a pocket. It works great for any time you need to bring a dish to a potluck.

My favorite frugal gift to give is personalized Pyrex. Pyrex baking dishes seem to be on most registries. I buy them then using clear (or any) contact paper and some etching solution, I etch thier new last name on the bottom (outside) of the pan – so the name can be read through the bottom. I include with this most of the non-perishable ingredients for one of my family’s favorite cakes as well as the recipe. All wrapped up – it makes a nice gift that is personal, frugal, and has meaning. I hope those I give them to like them as much as I enjoyed making them.

We like to support our local artists – a pottery studio usually has a sale a couple of times a year where beautiful platters and the like can be picked up inexpensively. May take prior planning and some legwork, but you can find some really beautiful unique gifts.
