Prepaid cell phone use is growing, now that the economy seems to be in a permanent lull.

You never get a bill and have to pay up-front which is a useful means of tracking expenses. The phones are getting better; Tracfone has a qwerty phone and a touch screen, rather modern!

I cam across an article that's making me rethinK one "fixed" expense that keeps creeping up on me: my phone. I really had to stop and think after I read it. It's here.

McMansions are offensive to the eyes. I liked the article too. Granite countertops, ostentatious/bold furniture, and intricate drapes in a home always made me think the owners were trying to overcompensate for something.

The "rethinking the American Dream" article was interesting. I actually posted a blog in a similar vein recently. I too think that the American Dream has gotten twisted and construed to where it now simply means: Buy a house. That desire to adhere to the American Dream basically bankrupted the country. The age of consumerism is now over. But the damage is still fairly evident in that large swaths of urban America are still overpriced and thus under threat of mass out-migration. Recent reports show that the fastest growing cities are Austin TX and Raleigh Durahm, NC, followed by other Southeasterly cities. Why? Because they are affordable ( at least more affordable than say-NJ and NY)

I've watched this happen as someone who grew up in Tennessee and come back time and again to visit my parents and witness the rampant out-of-control growth and Mcmansion developments. So the likely outcome is that one day these "new" areas will also fill to the brim with the same kind of developments seen in the older North Coast now, prices will rise and families will start seeking other means, which means moving away.

This is all because of rampant consumerism and again- this strong desire to adhere to the American Dream. Much could be done to reverse this sort of hyperactive migration if people sat back and realized that their home is just a place to live and not a means to invest in financially only.
