Weekend Roundup – A Little Early

by Lynnae on March 27, 2009 · 4 comments

Normally I post a “You Tell Me” post on Fridays.  However, since my site is moving to a new web host, there’s a good chance that I’ll lose some comments on today’s post.  And that wouldn’t be very good on a “You Tell Me” post, where the value is all in reader comments!  So I’m going to do my roundup a day early, take the weekend off to reorganize after being gone so many days, and come back next week refreshed and full of great ideas!

Blog of the Week

I love this week’s blog of the week.  It’s written by my fabulous co-host on Frugal Coast2Coast.  I’ve met Jenn in real life, and she’s absolutely wonderful and full of frugal ideas.  Her blog is:

Frugal Upstate

It’s called Frugal Upstate, because Jenn lives in Upstate New York.  She writes about all things frugal, from her menu plans, to what she puts in her kids’ lunch boxes, to how she saves money around the house.  She’s currently working on a new blog design, so look for her already awesome blog to get even better!

News of Note

I don’t have a lot of news this week, but Rockfish Interactive, the agency that works with Walmart on the Eleven Moms campaign, put together a video of the Eleven Moms at South by Southwest.  It’s a well done video, and it’s not very long, so be sure to check it out!

The Roundup

I actually found some time to read blogs this week, and there were a lot of articles that I liked!  Here’s a rundown.

Have a great weekend!  Hopefully by the time Monday rolls around, all will be well with my blog again, and the posts can get back to normal around here!

The “rethinking the American Dream” article was interesting. I actually posted a blog in a similar vein recently. I too think that the American Dream has gotten twisted and construed to where it now simply means: Buy a house. That desire to adhere to the American Dream basically bankrupted the country. The age of consumerism is now over. But the damage is still fairly evident in that large swaths of urban America are still overpriced and thus under threat of mass out-migration. Recent reports show that the fastest growing cities are Austin TX and Raleigh Durahm, NC, followed by other Southeasterly cities. Why? Because they are affordable ( at least more affordable than say-NJ and NY)

I’ve watched this happen as someone who grew up in Tennessee and come back time and again to visit my parents and witness the rampant out-of-control growth and Mcmansion developments. So the likely outcome is that one day these “new” areas will also fill to the brim with the same kind of developments seen in the older North Coast now, prices will rise and families will start seeking other means, which means moving away.

This is all because of rampant consumerism and again- this strong desire to adhere to the American Dream. Much could be done to reverse this sort of hyperactive migration if people sat back and realized that their home is just a place to live and not a means to invest in financially only.

McMansions are offensive to the eyes. I liked the article too. Granite countertops, ostentatious/bold furniture, and intricate drapes in a home always made me think the owners were trying to overcompensate for something.

I cam across an article that’s making me rethinK one “fixed” expense that keeps creeping up on me: my phone. I really had to stop and think after I read it. It’s here.
