Tightwad Tuesday: Look for Free Money

by Lynnae on January 27, 2009 · 10 comments

I love to make frugality a game.  I like to spend as little as I can on things, so I can have more money in my pocket.   Even more fun is looking for opportunities to acquire free money.  I define free money is getting paid to do something that’s already part of my everyday routine.

In this day and age where online companies are competing with each other for your dollars, it’s not that hard to find companies willing to pay you for doing business with them.

Here are a few of the free money deals I’m taking advantage of this week.

Free $10 Gift Card at Dillyeo.com

dillyeo.com

Today only (January 27, 2009), Dillyeo.com is offering a free $10 gift card!

What is Dillyeo.com, you ask?  It’s a deal of the day site, where one product is offered each day at a deeply discounted price.

$10 gift cards are limited to one per household, and they must be used within 10 days of receiving your gift card.  I’m going to sign up for a card and then check back with Dillyeo each day to see if there’s something on my “I need’ list” that I can get for a bargain!

Free Money to Surf the Web

Swagbucks is a company that rewards you with “Swag Bucks” for searching the web with their search engine.  Every time you perform a search, you have the chance to win Swag Bucks, which can then be redeemed for gift cards and other prizes.  Money Saving Mom recently accumulated enough Swag Bucks to buy a Juiceman Juicer!

Since I search the web a lot anyway, it was no problem for me to install the Swagbucks search engine.  In Firefox you just install a plugin from the Swagbucks site that adds the Swagbucks search engine to the list of search engines already included in Firefox.  According to the website, Swagbucks uses Google and Ask.com to return search results.  So far I’ve been impressed with the searches.

Other ways to earn SwagBucks include

  • Interacting on the Swagbucks Facebook page
  • Inviting friends to join
  • Recycling old electronics
  • Submitting a poll idea
  • Shopping
  • Commenting on the Swagbucks blog

All in all, it’s pretty easy to earn free gift cards.

Free Gift Cards for Transferring Prescriptions

Every once in a while a store will offer a free gift card for transferring a prescription to their pharmacy.  This week is one of those weeks.

The Walgreens ad this week has a coupon for a $25 gift card just for transferring your prescription to their pharmacy.  If you didn’t get their ad yesterday, you can print the coupon here.  Assuming that Walgreens isn’t out of your way, it’s not that big a deal to transfer your prescription.  If I had a prescription to transfer, I’d do it in a heartbeat!

Other Free Money Options

Two programs that I’ve written about before are MyPoints and Ebates.  Both of these programs work by offering you cash back for shopping through their links.  MyPoints rewards you with points you can redeem for gift cards.

Ebates rewards you with cash rebates for your purchases.  The amount of the rebate depends on the merchant.  And right now you can get a $5 bonus for signing up with Ebates and making a qualifying purchase!

If you like hearing about free money and other deals, be sure to sign up to receive the Being Frugal.net Deals feed, so you never miss a deal!  And while you’re at it, be sure to check out the forums, too!  And if you have a money-saving post, please sign Mister Linky, so we can all learn from you, too!

We’re thinking of starting the rebate game at Rite Aid (it’s the only pharmacy near us). I’m excited to see how that goes.

I’m going to check out Dillyeo today, thanks for the great ideas. I’m a long time reader, haven’t commented much (if at all), but I love your blog.

I signed up at dillyeo.com and invited a friend like it told me too, but didn’t receive any confirmation. It just returned me to the same ‘invite your friends!’ page. Am I supposed to get a confirmation, or just wait for it to show up in my inbox?

@Jenni – I signed up and invited 3 friends. Then it took me back to the main screen, where I had to add the GC to my cart. I filled in my address information, and since it was free, I didn’t have to fill out payment information. Maybe you should try again.

Wow, thanks for posting this. I didn’t even know this existed. Who couldn’t use $10?

I knew about the money for prescriptions, but I haven’t seen a coupon in the mail for one of those in a while. They used to come every couple of months.
