Before I get to the update, I’d like to thank everyone who has volunteered to write guest posts for me. I was amazed at the overwhelming response, and it’s a relief to know that Being Frugal will continue without much effort from me over the next few weeks.
Readers, you’re in for a treat. There are a lot of great frugal bloggers out there, and you’re going to hear from a lot of them in the coming weeks!
On to the moving update. I’ve been driving the wheels off my minivan this week going between our rental, Home Depot, and our new house. We’ve bought the primer, the paint, and two types of flooring.
We also finally made a decision on a refrigerator. Actually, we made a decision on all the appliances. It turns out the oven was in worse shape than I remembered. It’s not a good thing when the oven handle is held together with duct tape. So after consulting with my dad, who is helping us with the renovation, we decided the most frugal (though not the cheapest) thing to do was spring for new appliances.
Since we bought a whole kitchen’s worth of appliances, we got a good deal and a rebate, too. In the end, I think it was the right move. And yes, I went for energy efficient appliances to save on the energy bill.
At this point, the carpet is ripped out of the house, and we’re sealing the subfloor, due to pet odors. In the coming weeks we need to add the laminate and vinyl floors (we decided to do laminate in every room except the bathrooms & laundry room). And we need to prime (boy do we need to prime) and paint. The back door and some of the interior doors need to be replaced too.
The house is in rough condition right now, but when it’s finished, I think we’re going to love it! The kids have already met the neighbor kids, and they get along well. And my kids are registered at their new school, and so far I’m impressed with what I’ve seen there.
My goal for this weekend is to get as much little stuff packed up as possible. Then we’ll move the boxes to our shed and my dad’s garage. I hope to spend most of next week cleaning out this place. Friday or Saturday we’ll move into my dad’s place until our house is finished, hopefully by mid-September.
And I have to tell you. I’m tired. This moving stuff isn’t for wimps!

Hi Lynnae,
You’ve got to post a picture for us when you’re done! How nice it will be with new appliances, paint and flooring - it’ll look brand new! Many blessings!
Michelle
Good luck with everything, Lynnae. I can’t wait to hear how all of your progress goes. My new husband and I officially start our search for our first home tomorrow.
Unfortunately we don’t have the biggest budget to buy a house, so whatever we get is going to need some work. I’m very thankful that we have relatives in the home construction business. I think it will help a ton … once we find a house, of course!
When you count your blessings, make sure you include your Dad very high on the list. He sounds wonderful!
Wow, you’re super busy! No wonder you feel tired! But it’s all very exciting too, isn’t it?
It’ll all be accomplished, little by little. Congratulations on your new house.
When (not if) you get discouraged with all the frantic-ness and the moving, remember that the craziness is all temporary…. In ONE MONTH it will all look different and you should be in your home! Sometimes, for me anyway, it helps to know that there is a limited timeframe on the craziness
You can deal with most anything for one month!
Good luck with the kids in the new school and all. They will do fine with the moving - kids are soooo adaptable…. so just worry about taking good care of yourself while you are getting thru this! GOOD LUCK!
And remember, it doesn’t all have to be done at once, nor before you move in. Of course, I do not recommend living in a construction zone for 17 months either (like me!) but I wouldn’t trade the ‘fun’ of doing a lot of this myself and learning new skills for anything - it’s been a real awakening for me
PS - So happy about the new appliances package - now all your readers will not be worrying about those used appliances
Sounds golden so far.
God bless and good luck.
Wow! And I thought that I had a busy week. Good luck with everything. . .it sounds great so far.
Good luck with the move! Sounds like you’ve got a lot to do…but somehow it’ll get done.
Ok, there are 2 boxes of books I still need to unpack, but still.
