I promised you all I’d update once the contract was signed. The contract is signed! So now we’re in the midst of scrambling to get our loan application in before we leave on vacation tomorrow. And as soon as we get back from vacation next week, we’ll be knee deep in inspections and appraisals.
To address a couple of questions in yesterday’s comments and to give you a preview of some of the posts you can expect out of this:
- Yes, I’m considering raising some chickens (have to convince my husband though).
- Yes, I plan to plant a big garden and use edible landscaping.
- I love the idea of homeschooling, but I don’t think it’s the right choice for us, given the combination of my personality and my childrens personalities. I have a deep respect for those of you who do homeschool, and I’d love to do an article on homeschooling someday. If anyone would like to write a post about frugal homeschooling, contact me, and we’ll work it out!
- I will definitely be posting before and after pictures and keeping you all updated on how the painting and flooring is going.
- And yes, I’m sure I will get many, many blog posts out of this experience. I can’t wait to share what I’m learning!
Thanks for all of your encouraging comments! Someone commented that this was going to be a stressful month, and I can see that already. However, I’m confident that we’ll get through it just fine. Thanks again!

Congratulations, Lynnae! How exciting for you and your family (the vacation and the new house). I wish you the best of luck.
I know EXACTLY what you mean about homeschooling and the combination of personalities. I always said that I couldn’t homeschool because there would be a murder-suicide in our house – I’m just not sure who would kill who! I also don’t teach because they frown on the use of duct tape in the classroom!
Enjoy your vacation and get your relaxation in – you’re gonna need it – but it will ALL be worth it!
Oh, I’m excited for you! You WILL get through this; it’s a positive time even if it’s a very busy time.
Have *relaxing* and enjoyable vacation! :)
You should read Annie Walker’s blog, The In-Debt Net. She raises chickens, and has just had a batch of eggs hatch!
WOW! Congratulations! We are happy for you!
We just got some ducks for our backyard. They produce more eggs (around 300 per year per duck) and need less care. The duck eggs are richer than chicken eggs and give more lift to baked goods. You can build a duck tractor out of pvc and chicken wire for the day time and a house (essentially a cube with nest boxes, since they don’t need roosts)for the night time.
Hooray! I know you are on cloud nine! or higher! Because you are renting, you won’t experience the major panic of ‘having to move’(like having sold a house would be) out so fast, and can get your painting etc done. I realize tho that you don’t want to pay extra rent, but you do have that option if needed.
Stock up on marking pens, different colors, for the packing boxes, and you’ll do great! Just don’t put extra pressure on yourself… you have the rest of your life to settle in now! Enjoy the move and make it as fun as possible!
If, after the move the boxes start to get to you, just make a deal with yourself…I will unpack one box every day, or two boxes…. don’t think you have to tackle every single box the moment you get there! That’s the rule that saved my sanity on several moves… and within the month, all were done, because taking the pressure off helped a lot! :)
Also – cook up some extra meals now to freeze. They will sure come in handy on some of those heavy painting or moving days when you are tempted to eat out or order pizza in :) And it’s ok to splurge on paper plates while moving – my rule :)
PS – while stressful, it is a HAPPY stress!
My mom used to have chickens when she lived in the country and my hubby’s aunt has them now. They don’t seem to be too much work, if you like chickens and the eggs are far superior to store-bought.
PS, Yay for your house!
I agree with you that homeschooling has something to do with temperament. Sometimes it’s not the right decision (just like some people may be good teachers but less good as parents).
I’ve written on piece about frugal textbook strategies for homeschoolers and I’d be happy to let you repost it as a guest article, just let me know. :)
P.S. Yay!
Lynnae, I’m so excited for you! Congrats!
