Weekend Roundup: Happy Anniversary Being Frugal!

Vintage Being Frugal.jpg

This is what Being Frugal looked like a year ago on Blogger. We’ve come a long way, baby!

That’s right! Being Frugal is one year old today! (It was actually yesterday. I can’t believe I missed my own bloggiversary!) It’s hard to believe that just one year ago, I started a personal journal to hold myself accountable to getting out of debt. I never imagined that anyone would read it. And I really never imagined I’d have around 2500 subscribers in a year!

But here we are, one year later. My husband has been through several jobs, finally landing in one he loves. My love for writing and blogging has grown immensely over the last year. We’re not even close to meeting our goal of getting out of debt by June 18, but that’s OK. This last year has been a huge success, both for me personally and for the blog.

The Giveaway

To thank all you readers, I’m holding a giveaway for a $50 Amazon giftcard! To enter the contest, all you have to do is leave a comment on this post, telling me what you’d like to see from Being Frugal in the next year. More book reviews? More personal stories? A resource page? Message board? Anything you’d like to see less of? Tell me what’s on your mind. I can’t make any promises, but I will take your suggestions seriously when setting goals for the next year!

When you leave your comment, make sure you enter a valid email address in the comment form, as I will be emailing the gift card code to the winner, and I don’t want the winner to miss out. I’ll close comments Friday, June 6 at noon PST and announce the winner with next Saturday’s roundup!

News

Next week the M-Network is doing a special project! Keep an eye out for it on Tuesday!

This week Pinyo of Moolanomy launched PF Buzz! It’s kind of like Digg for Personal Finance sites. Head over and check it out!

Jim from Blueprint for Financial Prosperity has released a free e-book called College Grad Money Guide. It contains all the personal finance information a recent college grad needs to know. To find out how you can get a copy, see Jim’s article.

The Being Frugal Roundup

Glblguy made a budget spreadsheet, and he’s offering it as a free download! If you’re looking for a way to keep track of your budget, you should check it out at Gather Little By Little!

Do you know what your financial I.Q. is? Head to Moolanomy to take the quiz and find out!

There was lots and lots of great stuff this week. I had a hard time narrowing down my favorites.

Read a list of 26 ways to make extra money at The Wisdom Journal. It’s always nice to bring in a little extra money when times are tight.

Christian PF shares 75 gas saving tips. After my recent post on the high price of gas, I KNOW you are all interested in that subject!

Pete is doing a series on what he’s learning from Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University at Bible Money Matters. This week lesson is all about being in financial harmony with your spouse. Good stuff!

Xin Lui wrote a short, but very powerful post, Friends Don’t Let Friends at Wise Bread. Hint: It’s not “drive drunk,” though friends don’t let friends drive drunk either.

Did you know you can recycle your Crocs? According to the Crunchy Domestic Goddess, you can! Who knew?

Frugal Dad tells us about the most expensive two dollars he’s ever saved. Believe me, I’ve done the same thing before.

Finally, Ivy says “Make the most of what you’ve got” at Home Ec 101. That’s what being frugal is all about!

Have a great weekend, and don’t forget to leave a comment telling me what you’d like to see from Being Frugal in the next year! And thanks for making this last year so enjoyable for me! I hope I’ve been as much a blessing to you as you all are to me!

Happy to you!!!
Happy me for finding you! :)

Love the easy going format – doesn’t scare us off! Thanks for all the links to ‘we-might-like” sites. Resource page would be a good idea. Books also good. Maybe a Q&A page – where readers could pose problems and get feed back from others? Kind of a brainstorming deal… I enjoy reading about the solutions or ways of doing things that others have come up with for handing problems.

Keep up the great work! And always stay as friendly as you are now! We like that!

CongratzS!

Congrats! I love your blog and have it set as my home page. You are very inspiring. I would love to see more frugal recipes. This seems to be my biggest challange. I also like the idea of a resource page.

3 Jess May 31, 2008 at 2:06 pm

Congrats Lynnae!

I’d like to see a resource page with places to go for financial calculators, budgeting, etc.

I really enjoy reading your blog and hope there are many more blogiversaries to come for you!

4 Kimberly May 31, 2008 at 2:20 pm

Happy Bloggiversary!

I enjoy reading your personal journey of getting out of debt.. Your blog is honest and has a great layout… It’s easy to see a real person behind the blog and I think that’s why people love it so much..

Here’s to another fabulous year! :)

5 Mrs. Micah May 31, 2008 at 2:27 pm

Happy birthday to you! Overwhelmed by comments yet? ;)

I think it’d be great if every site had a resource page. There are many such things that I need to work on for my own site. Umm…offhand the resource page sounds like a good idea. Also perhaps some static topical pages which collect your best posts on things? Like a page which has an overview of your whole building a budget series and then links to every article in the series? Giving it a kind of unity and a place for people to link to.

6 Lisa May 31, 2008 at 2:31 pm

A year old? That’s all really??? Your site has so much great information I had thought it had been around much longer. Congratulations!

7 Susannah May 31, 2008 at 3:01 pm

Love your blog–happy anniversary! I love how honest and up-front you are! Anytime you can do more resource type posts and also posts on the basics of being frugal would be great. Great blog!

8 Ron@TheWisdomJournal May 31, 2008 at 3:04 pm

Congratulations and Happy Anniversary Lynnae! Thanks for including my article!

9 Adrienne May 31, 2008 at 2:19 pm

Your site is truly inspiring! Congratulations on your blogiversary!

While I know it’s not financial related, I would like to know how you are doing with the Couch to 5K. I have been thinking about getting started, and it was really motivating to read about your getting started with it.

Weird and nitty-gritty tips/suggestions/links that are out of the box are always welcome! I just added turmeric to my blonde shampoo to get it more golden – & added baking soda? to my other shampoo to help my scalp. ( I just put shampoo on my head & added a 1/2 handful of baking soda to it!) EZ, cheap & it all WORKED!
(Wish I could get you somehow linked up with my frugal blog at http://tinyurl.com/6jvnmf
Perhaps you could share – or lead me to info on the whole linking thing! I am frugal but only techno savvy to a point. ) Congrats!

11 Kaye May 31, 2008 at 3:35 pm

Happy birthday!

12 geoff May 31, 2008 at 3:46 pm

13 Eric N. May 31, 2008 at 3:48 pm

Happy Anniversary! May many more successful years come to this blog :)

As for suggestions, I would absolutely love a resource page! I find them incredibly helpful on various blogs because I can easily find them without having to dig around.

Thank you!

14 Julie May 31, 2008 at 3:52 pm

I discovered your website recently, have bookmarked it and will be returning frequently. Happy anniversary!

15 Sarah May 31, 2008 at 3:55 pm

Your blog is one of my favs. Your personal perspective using real life plain spoken stories bring me back each day. I’m really enjoy your newest posts about learning about organics and trying to be a little greener and still ‘being frugal.’ Keep up the great work.

19 deborah May 31, 2008 at 7:02 pm

I am new to your blog, but it looks like there is alot of great info. Congrats! :)

20 Jessica May 31, 2008 at 7:11 pm

Congrats on your blogiversary! (did I spell that right?)

I am always looking for a good way to stretch a dollar – we all work too hard to waste money frivilously! My husband and I are beginning our own small business, I would love in the next year to see posts about how to be frugal starting up your own small business.

I love your blog, look forward to another year of tips and tricks!

21 peggy May 31, 2008 at 7:39 pm

congratulations!! I am a long-time reader, first-time commentor. I really like reading your blog because the tips are simple and realistic to follow. What I would like to see are some more tips on “secret” uses (or perhaps re-uses) of everyday objects, for example, using clothespins as recipe card holders, that sort of thing.
Keep up the great work! Bless you!

22 Angie @ Many Little Blessings May 31, 2008 at 8:13 pm

I would love to see resources, and also personal stories that give great tips/ideas!

Congrats on your anniversary!

23 Pete May 31, 2008 at 8:16 pm Twitter id: @moneymatters

Thanks for the link Lynnae!

Oh, and happy bloggiversary!

24 Ivy May 31, 2008 at 8:17 pm

First, thanks for the link love- it is mucho appreciado!

Second, happy anniversary! What would I like to see more of here? More Home Ec 101 links, natch! ;) Kidding.

Seriously, something I’d love to see is a “This is my Frugal Story” feature where you interview or just post people’s stories about their journey into frugality. I love that sort of thing!

25 Jill May 31, 2008 at 8:17 pm

Congrats on the anniversary. I just got into reading some blogs in the last 6 months. Your blog is excellent and was one of the first that I came across. I absolutely love it!

I would love to see a resource page. I’m always looking for more ways to save and be frugal!

Thanks for all of your great ideas!

The Fathersez family wishes you a very happy 1st blog anniverary. May there be many more to come!

Cheers

31 AmandaD June 1, 2008 at 5:41 am

Congrats on the anniversary! I’ve enjoyed the female perspective on finances and money matters.

I’d probagbly like to see more content and less linking to other stories. I tend to skip over those posts for the most part.

32 Amy June 1, 2008 at 6:37 am

With energy prices soaring, I am most interested in ways to reduce consumption.

Happy Anniversary!
Amy

33 Jill June 1, 2008 at 7:10 am

Congrats on your anniversary! I am quite new to your site but have already found so many interesting and *educational* things!
I would be interested in seeing a resource page “pop” up. You give out so many great resources that I have to write them down. Having a page where they are all listed would be great!
**CHEERS**–here’s to another GREAT year!

34 celticbuffy June 1, 2008 at 8:27 am

I’m delurking to say that I really am enjoying and learning from your site. I’m still working my way through past posts. I enjoy your personal stories and would enjoy hearing more. Hearing about how others are succeed in their financial endevours helps encourage me to work on my own.

35 becky June 1, 2008 at 8:56 am

I like the roundups it helps me to find other great sources of financial information.

36 bunny June 1, 2008 at 10:33 am

Happy Anniversary!! Woohoo!!
I like it just the way it is – keep on with your awesomeness!! :)

37 Maggie June 1, 2008 at 10:49 am

I would like to see Being Frugal take on some more ‘green’ topics.
Thanks.

38 Amy June 1, 2008 at 11:00 am

40 gS49 June 1, 2008 at 1:21 pm

more contests?

really, just more of the same–original ideas for saving money

41 Bramble June 1, 2008 at 4:19 pm

Just came across your blog via home ec 101. would love to see frugal tips for large families! my husband often asks how people live on low incomes and yet we see them do it every day. we’re about to have a low income and will be perusing your site a lot!

42 MyMoneyAdventure June 1, 2008 at 5:59 pm

Congrats!! More personal finance stories!

43 adptrain June 1, 2008 at 6:07 pm

Blessings on a great year for the BF blog!

I really enjoy the personal stories (including the experiences of friends/family/acquaintances) combined with practical ways normal folks can be more faithful and frugal with their money. The blog’s gentle, consistent approach to accountability about finances really resonates with me. For me, becoming more frugal is like a gradual conversion; little by little, my life, my attitudes, and my outlook are changing–not just about money, but about possessions, my ability to bless others, and my responsibility to respond instead of react. Thanks for sharing your journey with us!

44 melynda June 1, 2008 at 7:08 pm

I am proud of you for starting this blog. One year and still going strong. It is hard to manage time and family and still try to be frugal. I am learning alot from those who write and trying to lessen my strong hold on to all that holds me down here on earth. Take care.

45 Sylvia June 1, 2008 at 7:32 pm

More personal stories. It always puts things into perspective and relates back to me.
Thank you.

46 G.L. June 2, 2008 at 2:03 am

First of all – congratulations on your anniversary! :) As for what I’d like to see more of – I’d say I’d like to see more personal stories. It’s much better to understand some concept if it’s accompanied by a real story onhow someone succeeded/failed because of it…

47 Josie June 2, 2008 at 6:04 am

I’d love to see recipe’s as well as personal stories. Congrats on one year!

48 Christina June 2, 2008 at 6:27 am

Happy Bloggiversary! I’m new to the website, and I am enjoying it! I really enjoy personal stories about frugal living.

Keep up the good work!

49 ChristianPF June 2, 2008 at 6:29 am

Lynnae,
that is so funny I forgot about mine too!! :) But anyway – congrats, you have done a great job over the last year!!

I think I am with a lot of the other readers – your personal stories are great!!

50 Barbara June 2, 2008 at 6:34 am

Congratulations. I like to read about teaching young children the benefits and rewards of being frugal.
