We never get snow here...it gets cold enough, but never when there is any precipitation around. My wife had to deal with the same thing. They didn't call off school, but wouldn't let the buses run. The students have a greater-than-usual problem focusing, and really don't want to be there. I hate how the educational system seems designed to make students despise school.
