While I think this is a better idea than just giving kids stuff when they throw a big enough tantrum, I find a car a week a lot of toys a year! What do you give your boy when it's his birthday, or Christmas?
We have charts for my two children, ages 3 and 2, for trying everything on their plates, tidying their toys, helping to clear the table, getting undressed by himself (for the 3 year old), going on the potty (for the 2 year old) and sharing and playing nice (a star which is always awarded to both kids at once. They are proud just to earn a star on the chart (a simple drawing, done by me or my husband in the color of their choice), and when they earn 6 stars for one item they both earn a page cut out of a coloring book, which probably costs about one cent. So it's not about value in money, because I feel you can't put a price on good behavior, it's more about noticing each other's good actions and letting them know you appreciate them. And the charts are not very rigid, they're more like a game of 'paying compliments' when we feel like it, so sometimes we go weeks without adding stars, even when the kids are good, and then they feel like earning some stars so they remind us to draw one after they've cleaned up their mess.

My point: good behavior and appreciation for each other within the family can't be measured in money.

My second point: give a car as a birthday present, not as a reward, it's too much.

I bought my 8 year old some "designer" cash envelopes from www.crunchycute.com and taught her how to budget her allowance. She has several categories in her budget system: tithing, saving, spending...
She now knows that money doesn't grow on trees!

Great idea. I seem to have an issue with my first grader on this now. She was great as a preschooler, but somehow it must have faded...

When I was about 7 or 8, my parents started offering me a dollar for every book that I read. I highly recommend doing this for any reluctant readers. At first, I just wanted the money, but I quickly fell in love with the books. Now, I am an avid reader!
Also, my parents opened a bank account for me when I was pretty young (13?). Although I didn't have any money in it - probably less than 100 - it allowed me to learn how to budget my money, read a bank statement, balance a checkbook, etc. at a young age, making me more responsible about money now that I am in my 20s.

Wonderful story! In the future, your son will be far ahead most other children when it comes to understanding the concept of working for money and the final rewards of doing so. Hopefully many parents will read your article here and get their kids motivated in the right direction too. :)
