I had intended to get to this yesterday, but life got in the way, and I didn’t have time to write a whole post. If you were waiting for my shopping trip update, it’s finally here!
First, my strategy. I made a month’s worth of menus, and then made a grocery list for Winco, the cheap grocery store in my area, based on the menus. My list for this week included everything non-perishable for the month. I also started lists for the next few weeks with all the produce I’ll need to complete the meals in the coming weeks.
Then I pulled out the Grocery Game list and began making my list for Albertson’s. Albertson’s has much better sales and coupon policies than Winco, so that’s where I get the real deals. I listed things I knew I would get, like 66 cent boxes of cereal, as well as things I thought I might get, like $1 jars of salsa.
For several items, such as the salsa, I didn’t know whether the Albertson’s sale price was cheaper than the Winco regular price or not. So I wrote the Albertson’s price next to the item on my Winco shopping list.
Then I went shopping. I put a big cooler in my car, because I was going to hit two stores. I went to Winco first and did the bulk of my shopping. It really helped to have the Albertson’s prices right on my grocery list. I needed butter. Albertson’s had it on sale for $2.50. At Winco it was $1.99, so I picked it up. When I checked the price for the salsa, Winco’s cheapest price was $2.29. I knew I should stock up at Albertson’s for a dollar a jar.
When all was said and done at Winco, I spent $125.16. That’s MUCH less than I thought it would be, since I’ve been spending $100 a week, and this was the bulk of my shopping for 4 weeks.
With a skip in my step, I loaded up the car, carefully putting the cold foods in the cooler, and headed off to Albertson’s. I got some really good deals there. I picked up:
- 6 boxes of cereal
- 2 boxes of instant coffee (I use it for baking)
- 1 bottle of red wine vinegar
- 2 bags of tortilla chips
- 2 cartons of half & half
- 1 big canister of Folgers coffee
- 5 jars of salsa
- 1 deoderant
- 2 -20 oz packages of ground turkey
- 3 bags of shredded cheese
The total before preferred savings and coupons? $100.15. What I paid? 33.16. Yes, I saved over $66. The cashier was impressed.
Here’s the breakdown of the grocery budget so far this month:
- $10 for an 8 week subscription to the grocery game. That paid for itself in one shopping trip this week.
- $18.64 spent over the weekend for stuff we needed. Not a great deal, because we spent the money at our local small-town store, and it’s way more expensive than the bigger city stores. Still, we’re supporting local business, so it’s not all bad.
- $125.16 at Winco
- $33.16 at Albertson’s
That’s a total of $186.96 spent so far out of our grocery budget. I have $213.04 left to buy perishables and stock up over the next three weeks! Not bad at all!
So I hereby declare the first week of my new shopping strategy a huge success! My next step is to start the price book. I will try to get to that today or tomorrow. In time I hope I can skip the step of writing down the Albertson’s sales price on my grocery list. I will let you know when I come up with a pricebook strategy that works for me!

WOW! You did really well. I’ve been making a meal plan every week, but have been considering making it a month ahead. I think you just helped me decide that it’s worth it.
Glad I could help. :) Seriously, I hate sitting down to figure out the whole menu, but once it’s done, it’s a good feeling. I think planning soups and stews twice a week really helped the budget, too.
Yep, and now you don’t have to do it for another month. Soups is a great way to have a meat-free night. I’ve been trying to do a few of those because meat every night is $$$.
I’m glad the grocery game is working out for ya. My list stores had some good lists this week. Got a turkey for .19 a lb, cheap cereal and other stuff. So I’m pretty happy about that.
So you feel the grocery game w/Albertson’s is worth the money? I’m on the fence to join or not. I do the majority of my shopping @ Walmart and buy LL at Albertson’s & Super 1.
Good job on the shopping & menu making. A month is pretty ambitious.
@Paula – I think we were all posting at the same time, and I totally missed your comment.
For me, the Grocery Game has been worth it so far. We don’t have a Super Walmart though, so I don’t know if you could get better prices there. Plus we have Fred Meyer, which comes out with really great coupons every week, and I can use those at Albertsons. I don’t know if it would be worth it without the Fred Meyer coupons.
I do think the Grocery Game is worth the $1 trial. You’d definitely know if it’s worth it by the time 1 month is up.
Impressive!
It definitely puts a bounce in your step when you save money! :)
Wow I’m impressed too!
Good job!
Have you tried making your own salsa and tortilla chips? If the tomatoes and corn tortilla wraps are on-sale, making your own chips and salsa is much cheaper.
YOU ROCK! That was some awesome grocery shopping right there!
As for the commenter that asked about super WalMart v. Grocery Game list stores – it’s totally worth it. I found myself shopping the list weekly and then going to WalMart about once a month for things I needed that weren’t on the list or that I’d run out of. You’d be surprised – I even thought I was doing better at WM because I was price matching, but with the coupons and the deals that WM won’t price match, the Grocery Game is totally worth it!
Thanks Lynnae & 5berries. I think I’ll try out the 1.00 trial.
Great Job. I’m a huge fan of the Grocery Game. I love it. How long did it take you to work out a menu for a month especially with Grocery Game? I’m always making the menu after I received the list.
It took me a couple of hours to make a menu for the month. I’m pretty slow. I really hope I get faster, because I hate making menus. It’s nice to know I won’t have to do it again for another month!
Wow – you did great! I just signed for a trial membership for the Grocery Game. :)
wow that is amazing. I have to say I’m abit jealous, I never heard of anyone anywhere making the kind of savings that Americans can get with couponing. In Canada, where I hail from, coupons went the way of the dodo bird as most were for overpirced products you’d never buy. Double couponing never heard of it, much less getting something for free.
If you can save this kind of money than I would forget about the price book, generally you can be expected to save 10-15 percent, that pales in comparasion to what you can save.
It also helps a budget when you do things like roast chicken on a Monday, then you pick the bones and use the leftover vegetables to make a pot pie the next night, and then use the carcass to make a stock and make a stew for another night.
That way you’ve essentially made three meals out of 1 chicken.
The same thing can be done with pot roast, or any meat really. Its a great way to go about things.
This -is- impressive, and as a girl who saves 50%-60% on her groceries everytime she shops, that should say something!
I’m curious as to why you start at Winco? I don’t have one of those here, but the principle should be the same. Is it -generally- cheaper? I usually do an Albertson’s/Safeway mashup, so I’m very curious.
As to Fred Meyer’s, I love their coupons too! I had no idea they were usable at Albies. I should call my local one and check that.
@ Amphritrite – I start at Winco, because the prices of non sale items are cheaper than anywhere else. It’s a really basic store…bag your own groceries, they don’t accept credit cards, etc…so the prices are kept way low. So I shop for things I need there, and then stock up on the sale items at Albertson’s.
I don’t know about your area, but our Albertson’s accepts up to 10 competitors coupons per shopping trip. So I use the my Fred Meyer and Safeway coupons at Albertson’s, so I don’t have to drive all over town.
