On day 6 of 33 Days and 33 Ways to Save Money and Reduce Debt, we are encouraged to share our story. Accountability is important when it comes to taking control of your finances.
Accountability is one reason that I started this blog. I knew that for me to be successful at my goal of becoming debt-free, I would need a place to record the ups and downs of my journey. I’m not very good at holding myself accountable, but when someone else expects to read a post from me on a daily basis, I’m pretty good about following through. This blog keeps my financial goals first and foremost in my mind. When I say I’m not going to spend money on eating out this month, I know if I blow it, I’ll have to admit that here, and that would be hard. It makes me want to live up to my goals.
Another reason I blog about my efforts to be frugal is to encourage other people who may be in the same boat. I think that we have a tendency to want to keep up with the Joneses, not realizing that the Joneses are often in debt. Being in debt just isn’t something that’s often talked about in the off-line world. In this blog I want to create a place where people can come and get real about their finances. I want people to be able to share what works and doesn’t work in cutting expenses. I want everyone who reads my blog to be encouraged that your worth isn’t in what you own but in who you are. And I want people to start thinking it’s cool to live within your means.
And the final reason I blog about my personal finances is to keep myself from spending money. Seriously. This blog takes up a lot of my spare time. Time I used to spend at the Fishing For Deals forums looking for the next great deal. Time I would spend browsing the clearance aisles at Target. Time I used to spend in front of the TV, noticing all the ads for that cool new gadget that I was lusting after. I’ve been putting almost all my free time into this blog, and when I hopped over to Fishing for Deals earlier today, there were over 350 new deals posted on the board since I last logged in! I browsed through the first page quickly and left without spending a dime. Now THAT’S an accomplishment for me! And in large part, I owe it to this blog!
If you’re trying to get out of debt and live more frugally, I encourage you to share your story with someone. If you don’t have anyone to share it with (and even if you do), feel free to hang out here at Being Frugal, and we’ll support each other!

Thank you for sharing. I am not part of the challenge, but I blog because I want to hold myself accountable to achieve my goal. Making myself make 1 good post a day also means I have to do quite a bit of research and ended up learning a lot in the process.
Likewise, blogging takes a lot of spare time so I ended up saving money too. I just have to watch out and not spend too much time blogging and not enough with my family.
Blogging is a good, free activity to keep you away from shopping if that is your vice. Very good post.
It is fun to follow you on your journey and see how you are doing! Cheering for you and success!
Heidi, the blogging really does help me cut back on the shopping.
And Boo, your cheering really helps!
We’re both in the same boat. Reading your blog daily encourages me not to spend and to put extra on my credit card.
Starting a diary (whether it be online in blog form or good old fashioned pencil and paper) is a great way to get your finances in order and track your accomplishments. I don’t think most people realize the power it has to help get your finances in order.
I started my blog for the accountability aspect. It funny how that works because 99% of the people that read my blog have no idea who I am. I’m anonymous, but accountable.
