I’m headed to Arizona this weekend. There’s a party being thrown in honor of my aunt, who has colon cancer. It’s one of those trips that I need to go on, because I would definitely regret not going. Because we are trying to pay off our debts, I had to make this trip as frugal as possible. This is how I managed it.
1. I’m not taking my husband and children. Though I’m sure my aunt would love to see them, I haven’t really seen my aunt a lot in the last several years, and she really doesn’t know my husband and children well. It will also be a busy weekend, so they really wouldn’t have time to get to know her.
2. I booked my flight through Travelocity, but only after checking out Expedia and the individual airlines. I made sure I was getting the best deal. To help get the best deal, I’m not taking a non-stop flight. Now I just have to pray hard that I make my connections.
3. I’m only staying one night. My flight leaves early Saturday morning, and I get back late Sunday night. That will give me plenty of time to visit with family, but I only have to pay for one night at a hotel.
4. I’m splitting costs. My brother and I are going to bunk together at the hotel, and we’re sharing a car. That will cut down on expenses considerably.
5. I’m planning to eat on the cheap. No 5 star restaurants here. We’ll probably be hitting fast food joints and sandwich shops. Our hotel also serves a hot breakfast, so we’ll load up on a late breakfast. Maybe we’ll even skip lunch.
So there you have it. It’s going to be a very long weekend, but I’m looking forward to spending a little time with my extended family. And I’m not going to have to charge any of it.

Have a great trip! Enjoy that precious family time!
I had my colon checked out at 40. My grandfather had colon cancer, and they said get checked at 50, but I did it at 40. Good thing. She found a polyp and said in 5 years or so it would have been cancer. Yikes!!
My wife and I were just recently shopping for airfare and ironically we found the best rate at American Airlines website rather than the places like expedia and travelocity.
Has anyone else found this to be the case often?
I’ve always heard that you can get the best deals by going straight to the airline, but it wasn’t the case for us. Perhaps it’s because I’m flying out of a tiny airport.
I was really surprised, because the rate I got was better than the price I would have paid to fly out of the major airport 5 hours away.
